bbbrrrrrrrrrrr(iffs)

Last week we held an all Morbid Angel Edition of Riff Of The Week. Votes were fairly evenly distributed among the contenders, with a couple of exceptions. Darkhorse submission ‘Summoning Redemption’ was a popular pick but fan favourite ‘Rapture’ ended up with an almost suspiciously dominant win. Even tallying up the three sets of votes for ‘God Of Emptiness’ (arguably their most famous riff) still falls notably short of the classic Covenant jam. Insanus!

This week we asked for riffs from songs featuring the word “ice” in their title. Apparently it’s cold in the Northern half of the world right now, weird huh? Interestingly enough, we didn’t just get a big bag of black metal. There’s all kindsa shit in here, so let’s get to it!

Howard Dean
Bathory – ‘Baptised In Fire And Ice’ (Riff @ 1:35)

Full disclosure: I submitted this very riff to the “fire” themed RotW a few months ago. Since it applies to both themes and is completely fucking righteous, I think it deserves a resubmit. It’s that dang ol’ bridge riff that hits twice in the track–the first at 1:35 and again at 3:40. Quorthon = GOAT.

God
Allegaeon – ‘Through Ages Of Ice – Otzi’s Curse’ (Riff @ 1:44)

the entire track is killer but the riff at 1:44 has never failed to get me headbanging real quick. It’s a super simple riff and not technical by any means, but sometimes simple is still heavy as fuck.

Taz
Infernus Presence – ‘Ice Cold Souls’ (Riff @ 1:15)

TAZ NOT FIND MUCH THAT EXCITE TAZ SO THIS ONE HAVE TO DO. RIFF START STRAIGHT AWAY BUT GETS GOING AT 1.15 AND GO ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND…..!!!

Hans
Saccage – ‘Milice Anti-Police Calice’ (Riff @ 0:34)

Apparently I think I’m clever. Well, at least this technically contains “ice” three times – try to beat that!

EggBeater
Bathory – ‘Baptised In Fire And Ice’ (Riff @ 1:36)

This album cover is my back patch for a reason. It was either this or Blood Ice by Eternal Champion. Riff at 1:36.

Yarnhawk
Strapping Young Lad – ‘Satan’s Ice Cream Truck’ (Riff @ 0:27)

Some well crafted keyboards start to set the mood at 0:14, and then at 0:27 the big, nasty, distorted bass kicks in and really gets things going, with the upper-register slightly dissonant guitar part at 0:42 really pushing this composition over the top. It is indeed heavy as a really heavy thing.

GoatForest
Bathory – ‘Blood On Ice’ (Riff @ 0:00)

Anybody else up for raiding a Medieval English village?

Araghast
Bal-Sagoth – ‘Starfire Burning Upon The Ice Veiled Throne Of Ultima Thule’ (Riff @ 3:35)

Maybe it’s because I’m a huge Bal-Sagoth fanboy, but I can never get enough of that real royal sounding riff that plays alongside the keyboards at 3:35.

Gorak
Blind Guardian – ‘Beyond The Ice’ (Riff @ 2:34)

MANY GOOD RIFF ON INSTRUMENTAL!!!!!!! GOING WITH LEAD RIFF @ 0:38 & COME BACK @ 2:34

vanNeun
Satan – Ice Man (Riff @ 0:00)

The riffs start at 0:00 and don’t stop. Except at the end, I guess, which is…quite an ending.

Lacertilian
Expander – ‘Harding Ice Command’ (Riff @ 0:25)

Water is unique in that it E X P A N D S when frozen.
