This Toilet Tuesday (12/5/17)
It’s Toilet Tuesday once more, friends. Let’s give ourselves one more week of new music before the year-end circlejerk begins. Hans and I picked out a couple albums that might have otherwise slipped your notice, but I, Voidhanger has a good showing this week as well. New tunes from Diablo Swing Orchestra and This White Mountain are a must, but I’m sure there’s more that’s worthy of our attention, too. Pick out an album or two we should hear from that list, and maybe share something you’ve come across in the past couple weeks, too.
Cultura Tres – La secta (Independent) [Sludge]

While the sludge tag still seems appropriate, a strong influence from grunge makes itself felt right off the bat here. Groovy, pounding drums and a pleasantly mellow vocal approach dipping towards a bit of a snarl are a far cry from the aggression I expected, but definitely manage to create a sinister atmosphere that climbs up to a dramatic climax at the end. 12/7/17 (Hans)

This has been a long, stupid year, and Grains is going to be my soundtrack for its sputtering final breaths. “The Brigand” delivers blow after bone-cracking blow with big punchy chords in its first half and leaves you in a brutalized haze until its close. Part blackened doom, part dissonant drone, this is pure audio misery. 12/8/17 (Spear)
