This Toilet Tuesday (5/29/18)
It’s Toilet Tuesday! Time to get you some new jams. Hans and I picked out a couple sweet death metal gems for you, but this week’s list is huge; there’s plenty to find in there if these first two don’t strike your fancy. As always, feel free to share your own picks with the group.
Ossuary Insane – Decimation of Flesh (Blood Harvest Records) [Death Metal]

I mean, there’s hardly an excuse not to check this; it’s on Blood Harvest. Still, in case you were planning to, I’m gonna say this is a compilation of some old, but nicely murky stuff that strikes a good balance between chaotic and headbangable. The rickety, unpolished production reminds me of that Regurgitated Guts EP from last year. Gotta love that drum sound. Songs are a good deal less straightforward though. Everything keeps shifting and threatening to fall apart, including the vocals, which display quite some range. The overall picture is one of a frantic fight for survival in the mud as something tries to drag you into its burrow. 6/01/18 (Hans)
Unbirth – Fleshforged Columns of Deceit (New Standard Elite) [Brutal/Tech Death]

It’s been a bit since we last talked about Unbirth, so you could be forgiven for having it slip your mind. That said, if you like brutal death, this needs to be on your radar. Much like the Unfathomable Ruination release from a couple years ago, Fleshforged Columns of Deceit is much smarter than the average brutal death album and no less intense. Its twists and turns are unpredictable, a far cry from the rote passages that plague other bands in the same sphere; it’s hard to put to words, but just a few seconds of listening should get the point across. 6/1/18 (Spear)
