Track Premiere: Assumption – “Daughters of the Lotus”

It’s been 4 long years since we last heard from the death/doomers in Assumption, but the band has finally crawled back from the depths of, uh, wherever it is that Italian quartets go, and have returned with the brand new single, “Daughters of the Lotus.” Everlasting Spew will be releasing their sophomore album, Hadean Tides, later this month, and you can catch a glimpse of what lies behind that jaw-dropping album art (beautifully painted by Mariya Popyk) below.

As you know, a lot has happened to the world during their absence; the pandemic is still raging well into its third year, war has broken out in Eastern Europe, and some tech goon recently purchased the website with the little blue bird on it. So, perhaps it’s fitting that Assumption dropped what is essentially the soundtrack to this trajectory of slow demise that the planet is currently on in the form of this funeral dirge (and forthcoming album). Their personal brand of death/doom may remind you of the subgenre’s greats, notably bands like Evoken, diSEMBOWELMENT, etc., but Assumption inserts enough nuance and fine detail to distinguish themselves from their forefathers. Here you’ll find plenty of crushing, gargantuan riffs and thunderous percussion balanced out with the introspective ambience that the band has become known for. Death Doom and funeral doom fans alike will really have something to look forward to when Hadean Tides drops in full later this month.

Hadean Tides releases May 20th on Everlasting Spew Records and Sentient Ruin (US). Say hello to Assumption on the book of Faces.
