On good music from genres you dislike

Listening to the new Yautja album, I came to the conclusion that, while it totally rips, I don’t care much for the guitar tone. It’s fine for what they’re doing musically, but it sounds just a bit too muted or muffled, lacking something somewhere that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s also the same type of tone you’ll hear from something about 99.9% of stoner bands out there, which got me thinking about that genre, which made Horseburner pop into my head.

Anyway, the point of all these tangents is that while I generally don’t care for stoner doom, Horseburner are an exception, perhaps the exception. This band goes so far above and beyond the “what if Black Sabbath but slower and with worse vocals and shit guitar tone” trappings of the style that they may as well just be their own thing entirely. Their 2019 album, The Thief, showcases some wonderful instrumental work, replete with dueling guitars, a good grasp of dynamics, all kinds of changes in texture through smart production… it’s just great. As someone who feels stoner metal is anathema, I wholeheartedly recommend it. You owe it to yourself to check this out.
