Join me in some midweek jams; this is a pretty strong week for new tunes even with a general dearth of big names, and I’ve found a lot to like. Vorbid – A Swan by the Edge of Mandala<\/a> (Indie Recordings) [Prog\/Tech Thrash]<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having not been familiar with the band at all, Vorbid<\/strong> did a great job of catching my eye with that cover art and keeping my attention with some equally rad tunes. That genre descriptor might be a bit reductive or misleading; they’re one of those rare bands where “prog” is the only thing that’s actually accurate, as they hew to some tried and true prog metal writing tropes spiced up with a more aggressive approach. It’s a sort of pastiche of thrash and death metal swirled together in tricky rhythms and generally off-kilter riffs, but they don’t get too weird with it (at least not in any of the three songs currently up). They never get quite as noodly as\u00a0Revocation<\/strong>, never as cheesy as\u00a0Dream Theater<\/strong>, never as heavy as\u00a0Alkaloid<\/strong>, instead occupying a comfortable middle ground that casts a wide net with who it should appeal to. Very fun, very interesting music here.\u00a010\/14\/22<\/strong> (Spear)<\/p>\n
