But what are we\u00a0<\/em>actually<em>\u00a0listening to? \u201cCircling the Bowl\u201d is a weekly series where we get to share the jams we\u2019ve been truly been jamming, and we invite you all to share as well.<\/em><span id=\"more-116693\"><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Joaquin Stick<\/strong> &#8211; Welcome to Prog week! This year has been pretty slow on good prog tunes so far (but fast on bad ones, including <strong>Hypno5e<\/strong> and a promising but totally vacant album from a band called <strong>Lunar<\/strong>). I wish I were mean enough to write some reviews of those two. I have some thoughts. But anyway, here are a few decent ones this year, including one from a band I enjoyed in my progdork days 15 years ago who somehow actually put out a solid record:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The World is Quiet Here<\/strong> &#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/silentpendulumrecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/zon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zon<\/a><\/em> (Maybe my favorite album this year so far)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Witch Ripper<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/witchripper.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-flight-after-the-fall-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Flight After the Fall<\/em> <\/a>(So glad Spear picked this one out on TTT, this is <em>exactly<\/em> my shit)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Riverside<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-BCXXbuQHxs&amp;list=PLfiMjLyNWxeYqLIWB9xmKR8VKfoUADTOB&amp;ab_channel=Riverside-Topic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ID.Entity<\/em><\/a> (Unexpectedly still relevant)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Haken<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/hakenfauna.bandcamp.com\/album\/fauna-deluxe-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Fauna<\/em> <\/a>(Far from their best but still good)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Megachiles<\/strong> &#8211; Took my kid to the science museum last weekend. So here&#8217;s some not-super-current things I had on this week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sadness<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/sadnessmusic.bandcamp.com\/album\/april-sunset\"><em>April Sunset<\/em><\/a> et al. &#8211; Wonderful, long-form (at least on this release) blackgaze from the person behind <a href=\"https:\/\/trha.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Trh\u00e4<\/strong><\/a> (I somehow thought nobody knew who that was; turns out <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.bandcamp.com\/features\/sadness-album-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bandcamp featured them<\/a> a while ago). With 30+ releases, you bet it gets a bit hit-or-miss, but this album and most of the others mentioned in that guide are stunningly beautiful.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maurda<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/maurda.bandcamp.com\/album\/cultus-brachypter-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cultus Brachypter<\/em><\/a> &#8211; just the absolute nastiest lo-fi death metal. Ugh!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aberration<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/aberrationdeath.bandcamp.com\/album\/aberration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Aberration<\/em><\/a> &#8211; cavernous and confounding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Rolderathis <\/strong>&#8211; I&#8217;m still feeling kind of allergic to new music, genre be damned, but yesterday&#8217;s heap of releases was too bangin&#8217; for my icy heart to resist. I&#8217;ve definitely been craving stuff on the more melodic end, probably due to the harsh noise wall coming from the upstairs apartment being renovated 9-5 for the last two weeks. Along with the tracks below, I&#8217;ve had <strong>Control Denied<\/strong> and <strong>Death<\/strong> constantly perched on my shoulders, sort of like the angel and devil <a href=\"https:\/\/media.tenor.com\/_btE7bTmFtwAAAAC\/kronk-devil.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trope<\/a>, vying for most obsessive re-listens of decades-old albums.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Apoptygma Berzerk<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchblackdrive.bandcamp.com\/track\/unicorn-video-version\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Unicorn (Video Version)&#8221;<\/a> (I think I heard this on one of those defunct Channel 800+ music stations on TV a zillion years ago. Historically I always approached music like a fucking NERD, by reading books and articles about it and doing long dives into seasoned greats before branching out. The frontier of the genre is not where I feel comfy. So this week I let off some anxiety with Grind Homework, including my first proper listens for <em>Scum<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Horrified<\/em>. Somewhere around the squealing sax\/surf\/grind of John Zorn, my mood also got noisy and experimental. Since I&#8217;ve been yelling at anyone and everyone about the\u00a0<strong>Majesties<\/strong> debut, much of said listening was melodeath from right around the turn of the century (give or take a few years).
