If you can somehow figure it out.

Are you fellas hip to Fucked Up? Since 2001, these Canadians have been mad prolific at releasing hardcore punk (and high-concept pop, and prog, and slowed-down versions of albums, and fake compilations of made-up bands from the 70s that sound awesome, and English pop covers, and Christmas songs, and all kinds of out-there stuff).

Since 2006 the band has been putting out a 12″ record for each sign of the Zodiac. Every one of these records contains 10+ minute art rock concoctions that allow the band to explore (even further) outside of their hardcore roots. This year, the band is releasing Year of the Hare, a 21-minute labyrinth of sounds. What better way to promote it than with an interactive music video that is completely fucking impossible to complete?

Navigate your Netscape over to Fucked Up’s website and click the lil bunny to “play” the music video/game. Beware: it is so difficult and nefarious, you’d think it was devised by some kind of devious horror movie type.

"sawman"

It takes me back to the bitter tears I cried as a child after plonking down hard cash to rent interactive cut scene videogames like Out of This World and Braindead 13 (or Dragon’s Lair for the old-timers) and being literally far too stupid to get past the first death animation. Why would anyone do this?? According to lead guitarist Mike Haliechuk:

“The theme of ‘Year of the Hare’ focuses on time, and becoming lost in it. The modern way of life, getting stuck in time-sucking gadgets and trends, stress and scheduling. This unsolvable video we thought was an appropriate way to premiere the song online – in small little chunks of time that are impossible to navigate through, you can only get lost in them and try to find your way out.”

Fucked Up will be on tour later this month with a string of very special shows. To promote Year of the Hare the band is expanding to 9-pieces and they’ll perform songs from the Zodiac series (many of which they’ve never performed live). If they’re coming your way, don’t miss it. It’s a heckin’ good time.
