This Toilet Tuesday (8/19/2014)

Picture this. You and your best buds are walking down some busy arterial in the central business district of your bustling college town. You’re on the hunt for something tasty because all you had today was a $1.25 Totino’s pizza shortly after you woke up at 1:00 pm. You’ve been stinging a bit today because your bros have been picking on you lately for being a total nerd who plays D&D online with your heavy metal pals. Suddenly, you realize that you can both defend your honor and kill your hunger in one fell swoop. The bright, Texas-colored logo of Freebirds World Burrito draws you into its comforting embrace like a distant mirage of a hot babe beckoning you towards a peaceful oasis.

You have a battle plan and a rumbling in your belly, so you saunter up to the counter and, beneath your sneer of domination, you command burrito man to concoct you a Super Monster on a cayenne tortilla with all the fillings. All of them. Your bros look on in astonishment, mouths agape at this sudden display of pack leadership. When you finally receive your tinfoil-wrapped prize, you shred through the puny protective layer and ravenously devour the entire multi-pound meal. Like mighty Heracles after slaying the Nemean lion, you march home to your apartment amidst the glory and adulation of all the surrounding coeds. But that night, in the midst of a heated session of Magic The Gathering, your stomach suddenly flexes, and you are only left with one immediate option. You rush to the bathroom and firmly plant yourself upon the porcelain throne. And you sit there for hours, expelling the spoils of your mighty victory. When you finally look in the bowl, you are overwhelmed with a sense of pride for the momentous effort you just put forth. Behold, the unending mountain of new emissions. Welcome to This Toilet Tuesday.

Acrania – Totalitarian Dystopia (Unique Leader) [Slam/Deathcore] Let’s be real: Acrania bring the heavy. The mosh. The curb-stompingly heavy music that Call The Slambulance loves so much. It’s a well-written album full of br00tal breakdowns and an absolutely stellar vocal display by Luke Griffin. I also can appreciate their politically-tinged lyrics, which act as a nice change-up from the normal “I just read an entire medical dictionary” feel I leave with after I finish an album like this. (Flushgod Apocalypse)

Enceladus – Journey to Enlightenment (Independent) [Power Metal] If you’re like most modern metalheads (and I know you are), you probably don’t listen to enough power metal. Fortunately for you, Enceladus are here to fill that unicorn-shaped void in your life. In terms of song structure, Enceladus don’t do anything groundbreaking, but god damn can they riff. Though this is their debut album, they can easily stand with the best of the genre in terms of technicality and songwriting. “Pave the Future” and “Darkened Aura” are standout shreddy tracks, and I’m pretty sure I can hear some Galneryus influence on “Seven Year Solstice” and “Ethereality.” It’s an all-around good album and a strong debut. (Spear)

He Is Legend – Heavy Fruit (Tragic Hero) [Hard Rock] Heavy Fruit is one of my favorite releases of the year so far. It’s hook-laden, fun, heavy, chill, fast, slow, and everything that one could expect from Wilmington, NC’s He Is Legend. They’ve spent years honing their sound, and they are definitely a notch above their modern rock peers. They tend to strike a chord with metal listeners as well, which is why I chose to feature it. (Flushgod Apocalypse)

Infestum – Monuments of Exalted (physical release – Lacerated Enemy) 8/18/14 [Blackened Death Metal/Electronic] Infestum are kind of an odd duck; it’s not unusual for black metal in its infinite variations to feature synths, but Infestum goes beyond the typical synthetic string and choir arrangements by incorporating some pseudo-industrial elements. Electronic beats and synth sounds permeate the record, but it’s rarely overbearing. Were these elements to be stripped away, you’d still end up with a great blackened death record. The riffs are downright nasty; the vocalist is powerful; and holy shit, you can actually hear the bass. The electronic bits might be a turnoff for some, but seriously, give “Ordo Infestum” a listen and tell me you weren’t banging your head. Between this and Primordium (listen below), Lacerated Enemy are killing it this week.
