It&#8217;s Tech Death Thursday.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First, for some news:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Immortalis, Pt. 2 &#8211; Momentum<\/em>, the second album from Alberta-based\u00a0<strong>Divinity<\/strong>, is now streaming over at <a href=\"https:\/\/divinitymetal.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-immortalist-pt-2-momentum\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp<\/a>. Check it out for some spacey weedles and deedles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arkaik&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Lucid Dawn<\/em> came out last October, but the video for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ODHFjBMJqXY\" target=\"_blank\">The Temple Aflame<\/a>&#8221; came out last Friday. If you haven&#8217;t heard this monster of an album yet, this is a good place to start.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of videos, here&#8217;s one for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=67pJg8dsPcs\" target=\"_blank\">Cold As Perfection<\/a>&#8221; from\u00a0<strong>Fleshgod&#8217;s<\/strong> newest. Not for those averse to boobs and\/or blood.<\/li>\n<li>Georgia trio\u00a0<strong>Proliferation<\/strong> have a track from their forthcoming\u00a0<em>Rebirth: The Journey Through Soil<\/em> (tentatively due on February 27th) available for your listening pleasure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=snGrsSY-3oE&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. I&#8217;m assuming it&#8217;s a demo as the production quality is kind of low, but the song is sick nonetheless. Also, pretty sure that alien on the cover has dong fingers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Imperium<\/strong> have unveiled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/imperiumuk\/photos\/a.260330217379278.61849.260329150712718\/972753566136936\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\">cover art<\/a> for their upcoming album\u00a0<em>Titanomachy<\/em>. No word of a release date or new song as of yet, but I imagine we&#8217;ll be getting steamrolled by titanic goodness pretty soon.<\/li>\n<li>The flush will prevail once more.\u00a0<strong>Fallujah<\/strong> have revealed the cover art for\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fallujahofficial\/photos\/a.143197192390086.24501.107698495939956\/1036148896428240\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\">Dreamless<\/a><\/em>, due out on April 29th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/album=1986514815\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" style=\"position:relative;display:block;width:400px;height:100px;\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>I know I&#8217;m not the only person here who prefers their metal fast and angry, and tech death is no exception. There&#8217;s an art to making technical music that actually conveys a sense of rage as opposed to simply mimicking it. There are plenty of artists in the tech sphere who have the tools to do the latter; they know all the chord progressions that sound sinister, they know when to use accidentals, they have powerful screams, and so on. Precious few seem to actually be able\u00a0to grab the spirit of that malice, though, and channel it into their music in a tangible way.\u00a0<strong>Deformatory<\/strong>\u00a0are one of those bands.<\/p>\n<p><em>Malediction<\/em>\u00a0is the first in a series of concept albums about a devil named &#8220;Sav\u00e4el,&#8221; following the story of his awakening and subsequent turning of everything to shit. The music certainly sounds the part; it&#8217;s played fast and loose, with less of an emphasis on being perfectly accurate and more on purveying the story through the music. You can hear mistakes and inconsistencies despite the razor-sharp production, but it&#8217;s not egregious. It gives the music a human element that is lacking in so many tech death releases. It&#8217;s akin to\u00a0<em>Colored Sands<\/em> (<strong>Gorguts<\/strong>) in that sense; it&#8217;s well-performed and well-produced, but not driven to mechanical perfection.<\/p>\n<p>At their core, Deformatory are a technical death metal band, but they&#8217;re wrapped tightly in a shell of OSDM. For every gravity blast and immaculately swept arpeggio, there is a sudden upswing in tempo or ravaging tremolo riff. They kind of remind me of\u00a0<strong>Origin<\/strong> in that respect; they&#8217;re a band that takes both the &#8220;tech&#8221; and the &#8220;death&#8221; parts to heart in their songwriting. It&#8217;s music that can set a backdrop for thrashing your living room to pieces, but you&#8217;ll find surprising depth to it if you sit down and pick it apart.<\/p>\n<p>Deformatory may not be unique in the world of death metal, but they are a rare gem indeed. Their blend of crushing brutality and technical aptitude is a force to be reckoned with, and I look forward to the continuing saga of\u00a0Sav\u00e4el.\u00a0<em>Malediction<\/em> should not be missed by fans of any realm of death metal, technical or otherwise.
