Take a listen to &#8220;Crumbling Imperium&#8221; right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bab2nJRTncU&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>; this one is a fair bit different from what you might expect from the band.<\/li>\n<li>Looks like we get one more\u00a0<strong>Brain Drill<\/strong> song before the new album releases this Saturday. Check out &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3KWlvbPUf_8&amp;app=desktop\" target=\"_blank\">Aberrant Mutation<\/a>&#8221; and get hype.<\/li>\n<li>After a couple long delays,\u00a0brutal death metallers\u00a0<strong>Breeding Filth<\/strong> have a solid release date for their upcoming album. Give yourself a refresher with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/breedingfilth.bandcamp.com\/track\/exhibit-of-perverted-lunacy\" target=\"_blank\">Exhibit of Perverted Lunacy<\/a>&#8221; and look for\u00a0<em>Perverse Devolution<\/em> on July 29th.<\/li>\n<li>Newcomers\u00a0<strong>Enigma<\/strong> are streaming a song from their forthcoming debut over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itdjents.com\/features\/exclusive-enigma-premiere-crushing-new-single-vile-bliss\/\" target=\"_blank\">It Djents<\/a>. It does indeed djent, but only briefly; otherwise, this is pure tech death goodness.\u00a0<em>Stars Misaligned<\/em> is out on July 22nd.<\/li>\n<li>The new\u00a0<strong>Anata<\/strong> album (you read that right) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AnataDeathMetal\/posts\/1375508039132696\" target=\"_blank\">begins mastering<\/a> in July. In addition to that, Kaotoxin Records is releasing a remastered version of Anata&#8217;s debut album,\u00a0<em>The Infernal Depths of Hatred<\/em>, on vinyl for the first time. By my estimation, there is no more maligned subgenre in the whole metalsphere. There&#8217;s plenty of good reasons for that; musically, the genre has remained largely stagnant\u00a0for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lkkDo8Sywrk\" target=\"_blank\">past<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F2Dy9K7ohfY\" target=\"_blank\">ten<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T-F_r9z5ZiM\" target=\"_blank\">years<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zTpcTLwrxOg\" target=\"_blank\">or<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C4bU0Pj4Rs4\" target=\"_blank\">so<\/a>. The lyrics are, more often than not, complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lf1sus2k-44\" target=\"_blank\">garbage<\/a>. Oh yeah, and the one time somebody actually does something new and interesting with the music, he appears to be a god damn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Deathcore\/comments\/42von0\/the_hell_is_up_with_ovids_withering\/\" target=\"_blank\">pedophile<\/a>\u00a0(or at the very least, a tremendous creeper). This genre just cannot catch a break. However, there is a beacon shining in the darkness, a lighthouse in this ocean of shit:\u00a0<strong>A Night in the Abyss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now bear with me for a minute; I may be a complete poser, but I like to think I&#8217;m a poser with at least some semblance of discerning taste. I, too, started to groan the first time I thought I heard a breakdown coming, but my feelings were\u00a0completely reversed when it actually hit. This was a breakdown with life and substance. The typical start-stop riff structure was there, but with motion and direction. It highlighted the haunting synth and piano background melody, an aspect of the music I had mistakenly been ignoring up until that point. My initial trepidation now vanishing, I continued forth in gleeful anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, deathcore is only one aspect of the band&#8217;s sound. You&#8217;re here for the tech, and A Night in the Abyss more than deliver on that front. There are a variety of influences at play on\u00a0<em>Necropolis<\/em>, generally taking a modern bent along the same lines as bands like\u00a0<strong>First Fragment<\/strong> or\u00a0<strong>Vale of Pnath<\/strong>, but with a splash of the straightforward aggression of\u00a0<strong>Soreption<\/strong> and some guitar passages clearly out of\u00a0<strong>Necrophagist&#8217;s<\/strong> playbook. The musicians are, of course, fantastic; the solos are exceptional, combining Ryan Knight&#8217;s sense of progression and structure with a style similar to Malcolm Pugh. Vocals\u00a0are solid as well, leaning more towards the &#8220;death&#8221; side than the &#8220;core&#8221; with only the occasional semi-shouted line poking through, and the drummer has incredible endurance and a penchant for tricky grooves. (The bassist is largely drowned out in\u00a0the mix; sorry, bass guy).<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of\u00a0<em>Necropolis<\/em> is how well it understands the principles of writing good tech death, then takes those principles and applies them to deathcore. The two subgenres have always gone\u00a0hand-in-hand, but this is the first time I&#8217;ve heard them melded with true cohesion. With any luck, this will represent the new direction of deathcore as a whole, transforming it into something more demanding of respect.
