{"id":56820,"date":"2016-10-11T15:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T20:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.toiletovhell.com\/?p=56820"},"modified":"2016-10-11T14:34:45","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T19:34:45","slug":"review-oozing-wounds-whatever-forever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toiletovhell.com\/review-oozing-wounds-whatever-forever\/","title":{"rendered":"Review &#8211; Oozing Wound&#8217;s <i>Whatever Forever<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to its\u00a0apathetic title, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever Forever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>Oozing Wound<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s most focused and sinister\u00a0record yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oozing Wound I fell in love with back in 2013 were a playful bunch of chaps. On debut album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retrash<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they brought stoner fuzz sensibilities up to a thrash tempo, perfectly willing to drag high-energy riffs out for minutes on end until they grew ripe on the vine and an earworm burrowed out from the rotten core and into your ill-prepared skull.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_58615\"  width=\"320\" height=\"240\"  data-origwidth=\"320\" data-origheight=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L_-f0gAk568?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 brought us their second record, Earth Suck, where they weighed more heavily on the sludgy characteristics of their sound and got just plain weird. They tested both neck muscles and patience by ending the record with the same four\u00a016th notes repeated over and over for THREE GODDAMN MINUTES while the drums only grow more sparse and primal. This album actually didn&#8217;t click with me for over a year after first hearing it, but I now consider it among my favorite heavy albums of the decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_96309\"  width=\"320\" height=\"240\"  data-origwidth=\"320\" data-origheight=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WVPc5d2gS8k?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possibility that this new record may be a \u201cgrower\u201d weighed on my mind as I pressed play on this newfangled third LP, <em>Whatever Forever<\/em>, but NOPE, I loved it immediately. I listened to it four times in a row after the first go-around and only heard more layers I liked upon each successive listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What struck me first were the vocals &#8211; either the reverb has been turned down dramatically, or Zack Weil&#8217;s\u00a0wailings have just gotten more desperate sounding. Either way, they sound far more vulnerable and\u00a0just plain scarier than on previous recordings.\u00a0The next thing I noticed was that there&#8217;s a lot more guitar parts with rung open strings forming chords I would describe as \u201cpretty,\u201d and they contrast beautifully with the bleak shouting. These two components are what make this record feel so much more evil than they ever have before &#8211; if previous Oozing Wound records made me want to throw a keggar in the woods with my best friends, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever Forever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes me want to crash that very keggar to slash my friends\u2019 throats and burn the bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can&#8217;t shake the idea that Oozing Wound actually managed to accidentally make a black metal record without relying on\u00a0any obvious tropes of the genre; at least, that&#8217;s what I hear when I absorb the\u00a0misanthropic beauty\u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/D4HeMs135kg?t=333\" target=\"_blank\">3:50<\/a> of\u00a0lead\u00a0single &#8220;Diver&#8221; and the primal agony of the verse riff in &#8220;Weather Tamer&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_25286\"  width=\"320\" height=\"240\"  data-origwidth=\"320\" data-origheight=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D4HeMs135kg?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is that Oozing Wound reinvented themselves without losing their identity and they still fucking slay.
