Sure, bad post-metal has a tendency to drone on and on before anything happens, or maybe nothing happens at all, but I could say the same thing\u00a0about a mediocre black metal band that just tremolos and blasts for 30 minutes with little variation. While that band will be ignored for being boring, they are not ignored just because of the the genre namedrop. Sure, there are a LOT of bad post-metal bands, but that shouldn\u2019t make us ignore the good ones. Every genre has its boring copycats, but it has gotten to the point where even the post-metal bands and promoters acknowledge this genre bias.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent example I have seen is in the promo materials for <strong>Gloson<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Grimen<\/em>. Over on their <a href=\"https:\/\/artofpropaganda.bandcamp.com\/album\/grimen\" target=\"_blank\">Art of Propaganda Bandcamp page<\/a> (who I assume wrote this up) they say \u201c<em>Although post-metal might be a very millennial creation, with peaks and valleys of creativity across an expansive spectrum [\u2026] newcomers can still offer new twists on an oft-tired subgenre<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>\u2018post-metal\u2019 is merely a springboard for bolder, more daring excursions into the beyond.<\/em>\u201d Now I\u2019m not picking on AoP; compared to most promo materials I read, these guys deserve a Nobel. They just happen to be the most recent pushers of \u201cyeah, it\u2019s post-metal, but give it a shot anyway\u201d rhetoric. I don\u2019t think they should have to do this, especially when it is VERY GOOD post-metal.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe width=\"400\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=3733200473\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" style=\"position:relative;display:block;width:400px;height:100px;\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m also not saying that the people who do this apologizing are wrong; in fact, it\u2019s quite an effective rhetorical device to get someone to try something they might not ordinarily be interested in. I don\u2019t have the stomach to go back and reread my old articles, but I\u2019m sure I have done this before. Something along the lines of \u201csure, it\u2019s djent, but it\u2019s really good djent!\u201d probably came out of my mouth at some point.<\/p>\n<p>The rhetorical device should be used for those rare instances in which you\u2019re trying to get someone to listen to something that is WAY outside their comfort zone. Such as \u201chey, I know you only listen to artists that start with Toby and end with Keith and you\u2019re not into metal, but trust me, this is different\u201d. It shouldn\u2019t be used on a metal band that is primarily targeting metalheads because it is slightly out of step with what\u2019s hip. So who am I blaming then? Well, the democracy I guess. As a consumer, I like genre labels because they help filter out some stuff I\u2019m probably not going to like, but with a high enough recommendation, I\u2019ll try anything.<\/p>\n<p>Shit. I got so worked up that I forgot to review the album.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gloson-Grimen.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-61724\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gloson-Grimen-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Gloson Grimen\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gloson-Grimen.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gloson-Grimen.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gloson-Grimen.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have three main criteria that I use to judge post-metal. Every song needs to be distinct, the building sections can\u2019t be boring (even if the payoff is good), and the hooks must be engaging (with at least a few that are hair-raising). Gloson achieves every one of these on this album; however, not every song does. Since this is their first full length, I sense some exploring and growth still happening.<\/p>\n<p>The first half of them album is hit and miss throughout the lengthy songs, with \u201cAntlers\u201d standing out to me as being the most unique with it\u2019s slow and punishing first half and an gloomy\/melodic back half.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe width=\"400\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=2490172333\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" style=\"position:relative;display:block;width:400px;height:100px;\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>They really step up their game with \u201cCringe\u201d, which is surprisingly cathartic compared to the doominess of the rest of the album. It\u2019s a little repetitive, as post-metal tends to be, but the groove just feels too good for it to matter. You don\u2019t need the typical post-metal patience since the whole thing is engaging, but the ending is a perfect billowing progression from the main riff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmbodiment\u201d is a perfect example of their song building abilities. While most of their material is pretty distinct from the major post-metal players, this song sounds like it was taken from the<strong> Cult of Luna<\/strong> handbook in the best way. When the sinister growls kick in after an eight-minute shapeshifting groove, the energy just surges through your veins.<\/p>\n<p>These Swedes do not need to apologize for being post-metal. They are on the \u201cI like this a lot\u201d side of the 3.5\/5 Toilet Spectrum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/NEW_TOILETSCALE_3-5_of_5.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38029 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/NEW_TOILETSCALE_3-5_of_5-1024x234.jpg?resize=960%2C219&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"NEW_TOILETSCALE_3-5_of_5\" width=\"960\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/NEW_TOILETSCALE_3-5_of_5.jpg?resize=1024%2C234&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/NEW_TOILETSCALE_3-5_of_5.jpg?resize=300%2C68&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/NEW_TOILETSCALE_3-5_of_5.jpg?w=1249&amp;ssl=1 1249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Grimen<\/em> will be released on February 13 via Art of Propaganda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If I told you what genre this album is, would you still click me?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":28,"featured_media":61723,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"jetpack_publicize_message":"Joaquin has words for Gloson.
