Check out &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vvdHcKp8p5A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Adversary, Omnipotent<\/a>&#8221; and look for the\u00a0eponymous album on July 14th. Here&#8217;s our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toiletovhell.com\/premiere-enfold-darkness-terror-of-a-perilous-quest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">premiere<\/a> from last week if you missed it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open the Nile<\/strong>\u00a0posted a new song from their upcoming album, <em>Levity<\/em>. Listen to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CIDVdWF98v4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Viral Colors<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0and look for the full release on August 4th.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rings of Saturn<\/strong> seem intent on turning their reputation around and have posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5qMugnBw4tU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">playthrough video<\/a> for their recently released &#8220;Inadequate.&#8221;\u00a0<em>Ulta Ulla<\/em> is out July 28th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/album=3997434234\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" style=\"position:relative;display:block;width:400px;height:100px;\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The Tech Death Thursday inbox is a haven for all kinds of cool music (well, okay, just one kind); I&#8217;m always happy to see something new in there, and I can be reasonably sure that what I&#8217;m getting is at least going to have good musicians behind it.\u00a0<strong>Transcend the Realm<\/strong> sent &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/transcendtherealm.bandcamp.com\/track\/conscious-void\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conscious Void<\/a>&#8221; my way, and it seemed to be up to standard. It&#8217;s a good tech death tune, carried by eastern European-style melodies supported with some deathcore-tinged mid tempo chugs (just a touch, don&#8217;t let that scare you off) and a bit of spacey synth. I was expecting a solid album with a slightly unique flavor to it and looked forward to the rest with mild anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that didn&#8217;t even come close to preparing me for the full album experience.\u00a0<em>Perennial Discoveries<\/em> is a well and truly progressive metal album, taking inspiration from a variety of sources and mixing them together in a way I haven&#8217;t heard before. The opening track, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/transcendtherealm.bandcamp.com\/track\/endogenous-schizotoxin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Endogenous Schizotoxin<\/a>,&#8221; is the most straightforward of the bunch, kicking things off with a lithe series of diminished arpeggios and some beefy\u00a0<strong>Faceless<\/strong>-style riffing. It mixes things up a bit with some dissonant chords and some oddball slide riffs, and it briefly features some cold, alien synth for a subtle sense of unease. There are some strange elements, but not too unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=418525792\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" style=\"position:relative;display:block;width:400px;height:100px;\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/transcendtherealm.bandcamp.com\/track\/ars-moriendi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ars Moriendi<\/a>,&#8221; a <strong>Mr. Bungle<\/strong> cover,\u00a0is where it really starts to get weird (big surprise). Gypsy jazz becomes the centerpiece of the music, bringing about a gradual upward swing in both tempo and tone. I wouldn&#8217;t say it&#8217;s outright &#8220;happy,&#8221; but it&#8217;s certainly more upbeat than your standard tech death tune.\u00a0Despite this being a cover song, it fits the themes of the album well, and the band does a good job of staying true to the original while making it their own.<\/p>\n<p>As the album moves forward, it continues to reference and expand on these two sounds. The aforementioned &#8220;Conscious Void&#8221; takes after the opener and adds in that slight Balkan twist, whereas &#8220;Pajdushka&#8221; is a metal rendition of a style of Bulgarian folk tune (and has a couple doom riffs tossed in for good measure). &#8220;Garnet&#8221; is a prog metal monster that banks hard on the &#8220;jazz&#8221; part of &#8220;Gypsy jazz,&#8221; using all kinds of big, nonstandard chords and time changes. Finally, the album closes on a nearly 11-minute atmospheric track, making full use of the synths hinted at on prior tracks to delightfully creepy effect. It paints an image of wandering an unearthly jungle at night, fitting the album&#8217;s cover art quite well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_68002\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68002\" class=\"wp-image-68002 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets-1024x683.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?resize=400%2C267&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/toiletovhell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/jazz-in-streets-tech-in-sheets.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-68002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I really could have skipped the review and just posted this shirt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I apologize for the word salad here, but it was difficult for me to really get a solid grasp of this album. I count that as a positive, though;\u00a0<em>Perennial Discoveries<\/em> is far from the norm, and I thoroughly enjoyed all its nuances and explorations. As you listen, I recommend clicking on the links to the individual songs, as the band has some short explanations of each of them alongside the lyrics. Set some time aside and go through it in one sitting; it doesn&#8217;t take long, there&#8217;s nothing else quite like it out there.
