It is once again Toilet Tuesday, and we are once more bringing you all of the music. And damn, is there a lot of music; we’ve got sweet tunes from every corner of the metalsphere this week, with particularly strong death metal showing. BertBanana, Karhu, Hans, Ellipsis, Dumpster Lung, and Lacertilian have each picked out an album or two for you to look into. Check those out, and maybe share something from the list that catches your ear.<\/p>\n

Wolves in the Throne Room – Thrice Woven (Artemisia Records) [Atmospheric Black Metal]<\/strong>
\nListen<\/a><\/p>\n

After a rather divisive release in Celestite<\/em>, Wolves in the Throne Room<\/strong> return to their older sound with Thrice Woven, <\/em>and it\u2019s a rather incredible return to be honest. \u201cBorn from the Serpent\u2019s Eye\u201d builds an amazing atmosphere, and when it hits its climax\u2026it\u2019s so satisfying. Such an epic piece to listen to. One thing to note so far is in both songs, “Born from the Serpent\u2019s Eye” and “Angrboda” is in the second half, they slow it down. So, I imagine each song is going to be their own stories, rather than go with a concept route. Judging from the liner notes, \u201cMother Owl, Father Ocean,\u201d is likely going to be their more intricate and ambitious song on the record. If you\u2019re a fan of the Cascadian BM sound, it\u2019s likely you\u2019re going to enjoy what you get on this record. It\u2019s definitely shaping up to be a nice return for WITTR though.\u00a09\/22\/17<\/strong> (BertBanana)<\/p>\n

King Parrot – Ugly Produce (Agonia Records) [Thrashy Groove\/Grind]<\/strong>
\nListen to “Piss Wreck”<\/a>,\u00a0“Ten Pounds of Shit in a Five Pound Bag”<\/a><\/p>\n

If 2015’s Dead Set<\/em><\/a> cemented the riotous Aussie grinders’ presence on the international stage, Ugly Produce<\/em> drags its red-raw arse over that pavement like a mongrel stray doggo spreading its infectious gastrointestinal worms to the world. What’s that fucking stupid metaphor supposed to mean? Look, honestly I’m not sure. What I do know is that these 10 tracks are short, catchy, filthy little buggers that you’ll find wriggling in your shit weeks later. If you enjoyed the groove-grind direction King Pazza started on after signing to Phil Anselmo’s label a few years ago, you’ll have a blast with Ugly Produce<\/em>. Barking mad vocalist Youngy has allowed\u00a0even more of his charismatic live energy to be captured on record, while guitarists Mr White and Squizzy somehow manage to fuse Wormrot<\/strong> grime with\u00a0Pantera<\/strong>-esque groove. Pretty farkin’ grouse. 22\/9\/17<\/strong> (Lacertilian)<\/p>\n

Kalmankantaja – Routamaa (Wolfspell Records) [Black Metal]<\/strong>
\nStream<\/a><\/p>\n

Kalmankantaja<\/strong> has released about two hundred albums, and has had about as many logos, in only a few years. Naturally not everything has been very good, but lately Grim666 (of several hundred bands, including Lathspell<\/strong>) seems to have hit a stride and produced several great atmospheric black metal albums. Routamaa<\/em> continues this, with a largely mid-tempo and melancholic approach. The Burzum<\/strong>-tribute of “Kylm\u00e4 Ikuinen”, Lathspell b-side (in style, not quality) “Veren Vanki” and livelier riffing “Varjon ja Tulen Jumala” break away from the most usual template, giving Routamaa<\/em> more diversity than Kalmankantaja’s earliest releases. If you’re interested in abm, don’t miss this.\u00a09\/22\/17<\/strong> (Karhu)<\/p>\n

Tombstalker – Chaotic Devotion (Boris Records) [Black\/Death\/Thrash]<\/strong>
\nStream<\/a><\/p>\n

Bite-sized the release may be, but Tombstalker<\/strong> manage to cram a veritable feast of hard-hitting, mean-spirited HM-2 worship into these two tracks. The blackened edge stems mostly from the vocals; the riffs are grade-A Swedeath all the way. While not presenting anything unheard of, the songwriting is nonetheless extremely solid, and they know how to hook you with some interesting dynamics. \u201cScared to Death\u201d comes up with some cool twists in the rhythm department, while \u201cTreads of War\u201d rumbles along like a tank only to surprise you with its nimbleness later on. 17\/09\/19<\/strong> (Hans)<\/p>\n

Terror Empire – Obscurity Rising (Mosher Records) [Thrash]<\/strong>
\nListen<\/a><\/p>\n

Portugal\u2019s Terror Empire<\/strong> wear their influences from 80\u2019s Thrash with pride, on their second album, Obscurity Rising<\/em>. Heard within their tight rhythmic assault are the likes of Slayer<\/strong>, Sepultura<\/strong>, Testament<\/strong> and Dark Angel<\/strong>. Despite these sources of inspiration, Terror Empire still sounds like they belong in this millennium, rather than just an 80\u2019s throwback. If you like your Thrash with a dose of Death and a touch of Groove, Terror Empire has you covered. 9\/23\/17<\/strong> (Ellipsis)<\/p>\n

Overoth – The Forgotten Tome (Hostile Media) [Death Metal]<\/strong>
\nListen to “The Keeper”<\/a><\/p>\n

The Forgotten Tome<\/em> is apparently Overoth’s<\/strong> second full-length album, and it’s been 7 years since the release of their debut. I don’t know if they’ve continued down a path they already began back then, or if this album signals a change of pace, but either way, I’m digging it. There’s only one track available right now, but it’s a good one. “The Keeper” plods along like a dreary march through a battlefield strewn with bodies. There’s definitely a doomy feel throughout, with just a bit of black metal influence here and there, and a nice heavy groove thrown in for good measure, like if Bolt Thrower<\/strong> dabbled in a little bit of black metal (atmospherically speaking). I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more.\u00a09\/22\/17<\/strong> (Dumpster Lung)<\/p>\n

Ufomammut – 8 (Neurot Recordings) [DOOM]<\/strong>
\nListen to “Zodiac,”<\/a>\u00a0“Warsheep”<\/a><\/p>\n

For the last few months, I\u2019ve felt a certain emptiness. I\u2019ve been craving something but I couldn\u2019t put my finger on it. Grind? Bleh. Death Metal? Pass. Black Metal? Nah. So, after not listening to metal for 2 months, it turns out all I really needed was some bad-ass Stoner Doom that\u2019s filled with riffs heavy enough that you feel it on your shoulders. The bass line in the opening track, \u201cBabel,\u201d is so goddamn heavy, that you\u2019ll start slouching in your chair as it oozes out your speakers\/headphones. It\u2019s a great track and it sets the tone just right. Once that song is done, you know you\u2019re committed. Cancel whatever plans you have that day. The only time you\u2019re getting up is to flip the record over. Both \u201cWarsheep\u201d and \u201cZodiac\u201d flow into each other in a fantastic way. The production is crisp but still has that grimy, sludgy sound that we all love.\u00a09\/22\/17<\/strong> (BertBanana)<\/p>\n

Process of Guilt – Black Earth (Bleak\/Division Records) [Sludge\/Doom]<\/strong>
\nListen to “Feral Ground”<\/a><\/p>\n

If you came across this in a record store, you might take a look at the cover and, seeing what appears to be a tree wearing a cloak, assume Process of Guilt<\/strong> are some kind of “trees-and-shit” black metal band.\u00a0 Wrong!\u00a0 This is pure sludge, plain and simple.\u00a0 I think the tree on the cover is dressed in black because it’s mourning its friends — maybe they all were wiped out by a nearby volcanic eruption.\u00a0 The viscous riffs are like a thick torrent of magma steadily incinerating everything in its path, while the deep pounding of the drums is like a series of subterranean tremors.\u00a0 Basically, this goes pretty hard, and if you’re in the mood for some sludge, I don’t think you can go wrong with this album.\u00a09\/22\/17<\/strong> (Dumpster Lung)<\/p>\n
