It is once again Toilet Tuesday, and we are once more bringing you all of the music. And damn, is there a lot of music; we’ve got sweet tunes from every corner of the metalsphere this week, with particularly strong death metal showing. BertBanana, Karhu, Hans, Ellipsis, Dumpster Lung, and Lacertilian have each picked out an album or two for you to look into. Check those out, and maybe share something from the list that catches your ear.

Wolves in the Throne Room – Thrice Woven (Artemisia Records) [Atmospheric Black Metal] After a rather divisive release in Celestite, Wolves in the Throne Room return to their older sound with Thrice Woven, and it’s a rather incredible return to be honest. “Born from the Serpent’s Eye” builds an amazing atmosphere, and when it hits its climax…it’s so satisfying. Such an epic piece to listen to. One thing to note so far is in both songs, “Born from the Serpent’s Eye” and “Angrboda” is in the second half, they slow it down. So, I imagine each song is going to be their own stories, rather than go with a concept route. Judging from the liner notes, “Mother Owl, Father Ocean,” is likely going to be their more intricate and ambitious song on the record. If you’re a fan of the Cascadian BM sound, it’s likely you’re going to enjoy what you get on this record. It’s definitely shaping up to be a nice return for WITTR though. 9/22/17 (BertBanana)

King Parrot – Ugly Produce (Agonia Records) [Thrashy Groove/Grind] If 2015’s Dead Set cemented the riotous Aussie grinders’ presence on the international stage, Ugly Produce drags its red-raw arse over that pavement like a mongrel stray doggo spreading its infectious gastrointestinal worms to the world. What’s that fucking stupid metaphor supposed to mean? Look, honestly I’m not sure. What I do know is that these 10 tracks are short, catchy, filthy little buggers that you’ll find wriggling in your shit weeks later. If you enjoyed the groove-grind direction King Pazza started on after signing to Phil Anselmo’s label a few years ago, you’ll have a blast with Ugly Produce. Barking mad vocalist Youngy has allowed even more of his charismatic live energy to be captured on record, while guitarists Mr White and Squizzy somehow manage to fuse Wormrot grime with Pantera-esque groove. Pretty farkin’ grouse. 22/9/17 (Lacertilian)

Kalmankantaja – Routamaa (Wolfspell Records) [Black Metal] Kalmankantaja has released about two hundred albums, and has had about as many logos, in only a few years. Naturally not everything has been very good, but lately Grim666 (of several hundred bands, including Lathspell) seems to have hit a stride and produced several great atmospheric black metal albums. Routamaa continues this, with a largely mid-tempo and melancholic approach. The Burzum-tribute of “Kylmä Ikuinen”, Lathspell b-side (in style, not quality) “Veren Vanki” and livelier riffing “Varjon ja Tulen Jumala” break away from the most usual template, giving Routamaa more diversity than Kalmankantaja’s earliest releases. If you’re interested in abm, don’t miss this. 9/22/17 (Karhu)

Tombstalker – Chaotic Devotion (Boris Records) [Black/Death/Thrash] Bite-sized the release may be, but Tombstalker manage to cram a veritable feast of hard-hitting, mean-spirited HM-2 worship into these two tracks. The blackened edge stems mostly from the vocals; the riffs are grade-A Swedeath all the way. While not presenting anything unheard of, the songwriting is nonetheless extremely solid, and they know how to hook you with some interesting dynamics. “Scared to Death” comes up with some cool twists in the rhythm department, while “Treads of War” rumbles along like a tank only to surprise you with its nimbleness later on. 17/09/19 (Hans)

Terror Empire – Obscurity Rising (Mosher Records) [Thrash] Portugal’s Terror Empire wear their influences from 80’s Thrash with pride, on their second album, Obscurity Rising. Heard within their tight rhythmic assault are the likes of Slayer, Sepultura, Testament and Dark Angel. Despite these sources of inspiration, Terror Empire still sounds like they belong in this millennium, rather than just an 80’s throwback. If you like your Thrash with a dose of Death and a touch of Groove, Terror Empire has you covered. 9/23/17 (Ellipsis)

Overoth – The Forgotten Tome (Hostile Media) [Death Metal] The Forgotten Tome is apparently Overoth’s second full-length album, and it’s been 7 years since the release of their debut. I don’t know if they’ve continued down a path they already began back then, or if this album signals a change of pace, but either way, I’m digging it. There’s only one track available right now, but it’s a good one. “The Keeper” plods along like a dreary march through a battlefield strewn with bodies. There’s definitely a doomy feel throughout, with just a bit of black metal influence here and there, and a nice heavy groove thrown in for good measure, like if Bolt Thrower dabbled in a little bit of black metal (atmospherically speaking). I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more. 9/22/17 (Dumpster Lung)

Ufomammut – 8 (Neurot Recordings) [DOOM] For the last few months, I’ve felt a certain emptiness. I’ve been craving something but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Grind? Bleh. Death Metal? Pass. Black Metal? Nah. So, after not listening to metal for 2 months, it turns out all I really needed was some bad-ass Stoner Doom that’s filled with riffs heavy enough that you feel it on your shoulders. The bass line in the opening track, “Babel,” is so goddamn heavy, that you’ll start slouching in your chair as it oozes out your speakers/headphones. It’s a great track and it sets the tone just right. Once that song is done, you know you’re committed. Cancel whatever plans you have that day. The only time you’re getting up is to flip the record over. Both “Warsheep” and “Zodiac” flow into each other in a fantastic way. The production is crisp but still has that grimy, sludgy sound that we all love. 9/22/17 (BertBanana)

Process of Guilt – Black Earth (Bleak/Division Records) [Sludge/Doom] If you came across this in a record store, you might take a look at the cover and, seeing what appears to be a tree wearing a cloak, assume Process of Guilt are some kind of “trees-and-shit” black metal band. Wrong! This is pure sludge, plain and simple. I think the tree on the cover is dressed in black because it’s mourning its friends — maybe they all were wiped out by a nearby volcanic eruption. The viscous riffs are like a thick torrent of magma steadily incinerating everything in its path, while the deep pounding of the drums is like a series of subterranean tremors. Basically, this goes pretty hard, and if you’re in the mood for some sludge, I don’t think you can go wrong with this album. 9/22/17 (Dumpster Lung)

Acephalix – Decreation (20 Buck Spin) [Death Metal] Appalachian Winter – The Lake and the Mountain: A Memoir (Independent) [Neofolk/Orchestral] Arallu – Six (Transcending Obscurity) [Folk/Black Metal] Archspire – Relentless Mutation (Season of Mist) [The Techest Death] Bionatops – Voices (Nefarious Industries) [Progressive… something] Canker – Earthquake (Xtreem Music) [Death/Thrash] Cerebral Incubation – Bifurcation of Primordial Slamateurs (Rising Nemesis Records) [Slam] The Chasm – A Conscious Creation from the Isolated Domain (Lux Inframundis Productions) [Death Metal]

ColdSpell – A New World Arise (Escape/Anderstein) [Heavy Metal] Colpocleisis – Fallopian Fallout (Inherited Suffering Records) [Slam] Cradle of Filth – Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay (Nuclear Blast Records) [Black Metal] Daydream XI – The Circus of the Tattered and Torn (Lasers Edge) [Power Prog] Dead Is Dead – Constraints of Time (Triple Eye Industries) [Post Metal] Deathtiny – Come to Life (STF Records) [Operatic Power Metal] Devilish Impressions – The I (Lifeforce Records) [Black/Death Metal] Diablo Blvd – Zero Hour (Nuclear Blast Records) [Hillbilly Rob Zombie] Druadan Forest – The Lost Dimension (Wolfspell Records) [Whimsical Black Metal] Drouth – Knives, Labyrinths, Mirrors (Independent) [Black/Death Metal] Epitaph – Claws (High Roller Records) [Doom] Fractured Spine – Failed Pieces (Independent) [Gothic/Doom] Goatblood – Gasmask Devastation Terror (Dunkelheit Produktionen) [Black Metal] Golden Dawn – Early Obscurity... Part 2 (Beverina Productions) [Gothic/Black Metal] Implore – Subjugate (Century Media Records) [Grindcore] Incertain – Rats in Palaces (Pride & Joy Music) [Thrash] In Twilight’s Embrace – Vanitas (Arachnophobia Records) [Blackened Melodeath] Kauan – Kaiho (Independent) [Post-Rock/Doom] Lonewolf – Raised on Metal (Massacre Records) [Heavy Metal] Mastodon – Cold Dark Place (Reprise Records) [Prog/Post-Metal] Monarch! – Never Forever (Profound Lore) [Creepy Doom] National Suicide – Massacre Elite (Scarlet Records) [Thrash] Nibiru – Qaal Babalon (Argonauta Records) [Sludge/Doom] One Master/Ninhursag – One Master/Ninhursag (Eternal Death) [Black Metal]

Onirism – Sun (Naturmacht Productions) [Space Black Metal] Oraculum – Always Higher (Invictus Productions) [Death Metal] The Psychodox – An Unmedicated Bad Trip Vol. 3 (Independent) [Sludge/Doom] Retrace My Fragments – Tidal Lock (Independent) [Prog Death] Satyricon – Deep Calleth upon Deep (Napalm Records) [Black Metal] Seventh Genocide – Toward Akina (WOOAAARGH/Chaotic Noise Prayers/Third I Rex) [Black Metal] Sinicle – Angels & Demons (Independent) [Weird Heavy/Thrash Metal] Sorrows Path – Touching Infinity (Iron Shield Records) [Power Prog] Space Vacation – Lost in the Black Divide (Pure Steel Records) [Speed/Power Metal] Stormstone/Vanth – A Prophecy to Come/Chalice of the Faithless (Vertebrae) [Black Metal] Tantal – Ruin (Sleaszy Rider Records) [Hard Rock] Thonian Horde – Inconnu (Grimoire Records) [Weird Black’n’Roll] Vacivus – Temple of the Abyss (Profound Lore Records) [Death Metal] Voodoma – Gotland (Pride & Joy Music) [lolbuttz] Vulture Industries – Stranger Times (Season of Mist) [Prog Metal/Rock] The Wake – Earth’s Necropolis (Loud Rage Music) [Black Metal] With the Dead – Love from with the Dead (Rise Above Records) [Rock] World Controller – Fiery the Angels Fell (Blackened Death Records) [Death/Doom] Did we forget a new release?
