It’s pretty slim pickings this week, but I’m cool with that; yesterday’s set of top 10’s reminded me of just how much shit I’d forgotten about, so a slower week is welcome. Hans and I have picked out a couple of noteworthy albums for your enjoyment; as usual, feel free to share your own down below.<\/p>\n

Darkeater – \u0427\u0442\u043e \u043f\u043e\u043c\u043d\u0438\u0442 \u043b\u0435\u0441 (Wolfspell Records) [Black Metal]<\/strong>
\nStream<\/a><\/p>\n

Depressive black metal leaning more on the side of Woods of Desolation<\/strong> than Xasthur<\/strong>, meaning it’s more dreamy-sad than suicidal-sad. Appropriately lo-fi instrumentation strums away forlornly in a relaxing stupor. The singer steps back entirely for long stretches of time. Both elements take a backseat to the ethereal, pearly synths that permeate every song, sometimes light on their feet, sometimes crawling right along with the rest, always wistful, always center stage. I don’t know if connoisseurs of the genre will be swept off their feet, but I’m pretty enthralled most of the time. 17\/21\/12<\/strong> (Hans)<\/p>\n

Mortiferum – Altar of Decay (Blood Harvest) [Death Metal]<\/strong>
\nStream<\/a><\/p>\n

Blood Harvest’s myriad releases saved this week from being a total bust as far as I’m concerned; of those,\u00a0Mortiferum<\/strong> stands out as a grimy diamond in the rough.\u00a0Altar of Decay<\/em> sounds like\u00a0Blood Incantation<\/strong> meets\u00a0Demilich<\/strong>, and I don’t think I really need to say more than that. It’s slow and trudging at times, raging fast at others, and always filthy. It’s pure OSDM gold.\u00a012\/19\/17<\/strong> (Spear)<\/p>\n
