It’s once again Toilet Tuesday, and there’s a pile of new music here for your perusal. Not much of it caught my interest (save for Cosmic Atrophy, which will receive the full review treatment in a day or two), but Hans and Karhu found a couple they dig. And you might too! Check them out, then hit that list for more.

Horehound – Holocene (Doom Stew Records) [Stew Doom] This band injected many pots and now they’re floating in space, looking for their W. It’s no musical revelation, but I don’t think one is expected with stoner doom. The riffs are certainly decent, and the vocals venture off the beaten path enough to make it interesting. 11/30/18 (Hans)

Carbon Colossal – Celestial Eels (Independent) [Weird Black Metal] There seemed to be a slew of space-themed black metal (i.e. two or three bands playing it) some time ago, and I think none of it sufficiently explored the notion that space, while awesome, is also absolutely god damn terrifying. Carbon Colossal have some of the atmospheric grandeur of e.g. Mesarthim, but this is frequently messed up by music that sounds like Jute Gyte writing the soundtrack to the final third of Richter’s novel – discordant and inhospitable sounds that put a fear of the cosmos in you. Would be more effective with a less murky sound though. 12/1/18 (Hans)

Voodus – Into the Wild (Helter Skelter Productions) [Black Metal] Voodus is another Swedish black metal band, this time a debutante. And if you’re going to only check out one (black metal) album this week, let it be this. Voodus’ songs are lengthier than many of their peers could rightfully manage, but each goes through several riffs, moods, tempos, styles and transitions with such passion and cohesion that carrying their lengths seems like child’s play. Into The Wild is not a particularly experimental album, though in a way it could be described as ‘adventurous’, and very much excitable one. 11/26/18 (Karhu)

Valkyrja – Throne Ablaze (WTC Productions) [Black Metal] Fast, nasty, melodic, somewhat modern sounding second wave black metal with a particularly nasty habit of being Swedish. Nothing could sum up Valkyrja better. Their crude beginnings saw them pursue a sound so original, they were compared most often to Watain (the originality of whose ideas is rather questionable as well) but by their third record, Valkyrja had working songs, and genuinely memorable riffs to offer. Thrones Ablaze would seem to continue this trajectory with added consistency – names like Dissection, Dark Funeral, and Marduk still loom on the horizon, but songs are no longer reliant on a singular motif, each riff working towards a better whole. Valkyrja could do with a killer riff or two more, but this is some of the better quality working man’s black metal released this year. 11/26/18 (Karhu)

Cantique Lépreux – Paysages polaires (Eisenwald) [Black Metal] Atmospheric black metal that’s still abundantly melodic and rich in riffs, or rather reliant on said features. Cantique Lepreux doesn’t cram their songs full of ideas, rather building lengthier pieces from a few central motifs. Largely a Chasse-Galerie / Melee des Aurores members’ side-project, their riffs are as cold and wintry as are their lyrics, the melodies carry a hint similar to Forteresse (with whom they share live-membership as well), but where the latter’s atmospheric inclinations were directed towards ambiance, Cantique Lepreux has more direction, momentum and movement. 11/30/18 (Karhu)

44 Magnum – 1977-2018 Prisoner (LMF) [Heavy Metal]

Alone in the Mist – See Them Dying (Narcoleptica Productions) [Black Doom] Arrayan Path – Archegonoi (Pitch Black Records) [Power Metal] Atomic Death Squad – Brain Dead (Independent) [Crossover Thrash] Ayyur – The Lunatic Creature (Sentient Ruin) [Black Metal] Bane – Esoteric Formulae (Black Market Metal Label) [Melodic Black Metal] Battalions – Forever Marching Backwards (APF Records) [Sludge] Battlegrave – Relics of a Dead Earth (Independent) [Thrash] Blaine Rohmer – The World in Between (Independent) [Gothic/Doom] Blasphemer – Lust of the Goat (Grindscene Records) [Death Metal] Blut auf dem Eis – The Betrayal of Fenrir (Independent) [Black Metal] Brahdr’uhz – Sublimez Secte (Independent) [Black Metal] Cosmic Atrophy – The Void Engineers (Independent) [Freaky Space Death Metal] Degredo – A Noite dos Tempos (Signal Rex) [Vaguely Black Metal-Sounding Noises] Energema – The Magic Wardrobe (Sublimity Records) [Power Metal] Faršas / Cut To Fit – split (No Bread Records) [Grindcore] Felis Catus – Answers to Human Hypocrisy (Southern Hell Records) [Black Metal] Illusoria – King (7hard Records) [Power Metal] Incinerator – Concept of Cruelty (Raw Skull Recordz) [Death Metal] In Crucem Agere – Graveyard of Liars (Independent) [Black Metal] Inoculated Life – Exist to Decay (Redefining Darkness) [Death Metal] Kenosis – Consecrationem (Prosthetic Records) [Black Metal] Lividity – Perverseverance (Metal Age Productions) [Brutal Death Metal] Lord of Solitude / Thronehammer – Vol. 1 – Vampire Bites (split- Church Within) [Doom] Lunae Ortus – White-Night-Wropt (Independent) [Symphonic Death/Black Metal] Marasme – Malsons (Odio Sonoro) [Proggy Sludge] Marius Danielsen’s Legend of Valley Doom – Marius Danielsen’s Legend of Valley Doom Part 2 (Crime Records) [Marius Danielsen Metal] Master – Vindictive Miscreant (Transcending Obscurity) [Death Metal] The Monolith Deathcult – V2 – Vergelding (Independent) [Industrialish Death Metal] Morbosidad / Kill – Santaurio del Diablo (split- Hells Headbangers) [Black/Death Metal]

Mørknatt – Victorious Satan (Abyssal Sound Records) [Black Metal] Мужчины в Металле – Пусть душа расправит крылья (Independent) [Power Metal] Nachtmystium – Resilient (Prophecy Productions) [Black Metal] Necroart – Caino (The Goatmancer) [Death Metal] Old Man Lizard – True Misery (Wasted State Records) [Stoner Metal] Overpower – One Mind, One Prison (Independent) [Thrash/Melodeath] Sacrosanct – Necropolis (Rock of Angels Records) [Off-Thrash] Sex Machineguns – Iron Soul (Kanameishi Records) [Power Metal]

Shadows Ground / Sale Freux – L’Envolée de Circé / The Age of Ignorance (split- Shattenkult Produktionen) [Black Metal]

Stilla – Synviljor (Nordvis) [Black Metal] Thirdmoon – Terrarum Exuviae (Independent) [Melodeath] Vaginal Addiction – Orgy of Depravity (CDN Records) [Not Googling This At Work Metal]

Valhalore – Solace & Solitude (Independent) [Folk] Vane – Black Vengeance (Independent) [Melodeath] Veonity – Legend of the Starborn (Sliptrick Records) [Power Metal] Virgin Black – Requiem – Pianissimo (Independent) [Opera?] Viscera/// – City of Dope and Violence (Third I Rex/Toten Schwan) [Post-Metal] Vitriol – Pain Will Define Their Death (semi-reissue- Everlasting Spew) [Death Metal] Voices from Beyond – Black Cathedral (Volcano Records) [Heavy Metal/Thrash] Whoredom Rife – Nid – Hymner av hat (Terratvr Possessions) [Black Metal] Wolves of Odin – Laid to Waste (Independent) [Black/Speed Metal] Did we forget a new release?
