Toilet Tuesday rolls around once more, bringing with it a deluge of new music to break up your midweek ennui. Karhu’s got a couple solid jams for you to check out, and it shouldn’t take a lot of time to parse out this week’s list for the good stuff. Let us know what else is good in the comments.

""October Tide – In Splendor Below (Agonia Records) [Death Doom]

Listen

I will not lie, I was bitterly disappointed when “I, The Polluter” dropped. I enjoyed the bands previous, melodic, hook-laden doomgasm quite a bit, but all of that seemed to have disappeared. The doom, the hooks and to some extent, the melodies. First playthrough of the whole album did not alleviate my fears. But eventually In Splendour Below hit a groove. I am still thoroughly conflicted over whether I like it or not, but seem to be returning to it frequently enough to at least recommend it to all fans of the fans previous few records. 5/17/19 (Karhu)

Bethlehem – Lebe dich leer (Prophecy) [Prog]

Listen

You don’t really ever know what you’re going to get with Bethlehem. From the masterful Dark Metal, to the unhinged DSBM stylings of Dictius Te Necare to whatever Hexenkotoolonganame was. And not all of it has worked but addition of Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult’s expressive vocalist Onielar to the fold on 2016’s self-titled return to black metal – only with a far more brutal, and heavy sound than before, thanks to greater strings-to-guitar ratio, did. Lebe dich leer sees the band transition to… prog metal? There’s a good few riffs here that tell tales of blackness past, and Onielar’s commendable performance helps ground there, but mostly the songwriting here includes airy arpeggios and fat, groovy riffs more akin to prog than BM, by rule of thumb. Definitely one to keep an eye out for. 5/17/19 (Karhu)
