Even the band is apparently embarrassed of this record, calling it \u201cselfish\u201d in retrospective interviews, but I consider it their finest moment.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_28897\"  width=\"320\" height=\"240\"  data-origwidth=\"320\" data-origheight=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aUultIb2pPc?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Everyone complains about how treasured underground bands gradually water down their heavy sound to be more palatable to mainstream audience, and once a band goes \u201csoft\u201d, they very rarely get heavy again (at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hF5YaGCL7dQ\" target=\"_blank\">not convincingly<\/a>). Notable exceptions of bands who actually put out heavier albums in their later career include Pantera, Skid Row\u2026 and Sum 41.<\/p>\n<p>Sum 41 had it made in the post-Greenday explosion of power-pop bands with bratty singing and politely distorted guitars. They had no reason to diverge from the formula of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CMX2lPum_pg\" target=\"_blank\">kinda-rapped verse with a catchy chorus<\/a>, 4-chord progressions from beginning to end. They did it though, probably thanks to the only member of the band without a severe melanin deficiency, lead guitarist Dave \u201cBrownsound\u201d Baksh. Their breakout album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WcNDKxTbOks\" target=\"_blank\">All Killer, No Filler<\/a><\/em> contained lyrical hints of their hesher fetish (\u201cHeavy metal and mullets, it\u2019s how we were raised \u2013 Maiden and Priest were the gods that we praised\u201d) as well as the goofy faux hair metal jam \u201cPain For Pleasure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_36128\"  width=\"320\" height=\"240\"  data-origwidth=\"320\" data-origheight=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Bl08yf0hOU?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IRaZDfmowj8\" target=\"_blank\">Does This Look Infected<\/a><\/em> had a slightly darker tone and few hard rock licks thrown in amongst the expected pop punk tropes, a winning cocktail for earning the hearts of angsty teenagers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_64094\"  width=\"320\" height=\"240\"  data-origwidth=\"320\" data-origheight=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tFKqNb-wKJs?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What happened next? It was catchy\u00a0and accessible in spite of being dark and kinda heavy, a harbinger of a time\u00a0where sizzling licks can intermingle with singalong choruses in peace. Alas, it was not to be, as Brownsound wanted this to be Sum 41\u2019s new modus operandi while the rest of the band (and apparently many fans) considered it a failed experiment. (The early 2000\u2019s was such a vibrant time.)<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nLet&#8217;s end on a positive note. Now, as much as I love Chuck and the two records that precede it, I have to admit that none of these releases are Sum 41\u2019s greatest gift to the universe.
