Hell yeah, it’s Toilet Tuesday. This is one of the best weeks for new music we’ve had in awhile; lots of good sludge, some sweet tech releases (a couple of which I recently covered<\/a>), and plenty more. Hans and I have a couple bangers picked out, and there’s lots more in the list below.<\/p>\n

Svarttjern – Shame Is Just a Word (Soulseller Records) [Black Metal]<\/strong>
\nListen<\/a><\/p>\n

Given that these guys have been around for a good 15 years and feature several members of Carpathian Forest<\/strong>, they might not need much talking about, but all this was news to me, so here goes. Svarttjern<\/strong> play pretty well-made black metal with a pretty clean sound and mixed with a dash of thrash. The mix is not unlike 1349<\/strong>, but not of quite the same caliber. The opener and the second half of “Frost Embalmed Abyss” really rip, and if there’s more such bangers on the record, it might be enough to carry them through weaker bits like that second song. 1\/17\/20<\/strong> (Hans)<\/p>\n

Garganjua – Toward the Sun (Holy Roar Records) [Post-Metal\/Sludge\/Doom]<\/strong>
\nListen to “The New Sun”<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a good week to be a sludge\/post-metal fan; plenty of quality releases are coming up, but\u00a0Garganjua<\/strong> takes the crown as far as I’m concerned for being the sludgiest most post-metallic of the lot. It’s everything you could want from this type of music; big, thick distortion, soothing cleans (both guitars and vocals), ragged howls, lightly proggy riffs… it’s the whole package. “The New Sun” rules, and I’d be happy if the rest of the album is even half as good.\u00a01\/17\/20<\/strong> (Spear)<\/p>\n
