It’s true that the dead are all around us. Divorced from any comforting platitude, they form a film on our monitors, accumulate in dark corners, and provide sustenance for microscopic arachnids. The human body is in a constant state of ecdysis; dust inside the home is composed of anywhere from 20-50% dead skin cells. With this fun fact in mind, take a deep breath with me before clicking play on this exclusive Necroferum track premiere.

Speaking of cells and organelles, the hollow gutturals that introduce “Profound Illusions of a Pathological Subconscious” bring Mitochondrion to mind, though Necroferum is decidedly less esoteric. In place of mystical formulae are walls of deathgrind sound—approaching war metal in their rabidity—set with a slurry of frantic blastbeats. At this BPM, with this much reverb, songs can quickly lose their identity, but the band knows how to construct a lasting tomb. Setpiece moments, like a rapid deceleration into beatdown hardcore, or eerie clean guitars à la Execration, engrave themselves in memory as audible memento mori. With each listen, we’re reminded not only of the necrorealm that is our shared destiny, but also, more immediately, there’s no promise we’ll live to hear this track again.

Necroferum describes “Profound Illusions of a Pathological Subconscious:”

This track delves deep into the psyche, exploring the internalization of the soul’s darkest aspects, a journey through the shadows of the internal void. The atmosphere we created in this recording really embodies that descent, blending the punishing weight of doom with the visceral rawness of death metal.

Visions from the Necrorealm releases November 4 via Nuclear Winter Records.
