Form and… Coma Cluster Void?!
The Toilet Ov Hell loves death metal vocalist Will Smith – both our writing team and our community. You can find our community on these articles seven days a week and on Facebook. Get on that shit if you haven’t. Interact with Toilet Ov Hell writers and editors twenty four hours a day! In case you don’t believe me, Will Smith’s various projects have been covered at the Toilet Ov Hell here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and I probably missed a couple stories, fuck. In case you still don’t believe me, Artificial Brain’s Labyrinth Constellation was selected as our community’s favorite heavy metal album of 2014. I even got a chance to meet and chat with Will Smith in 2014.
I recently received an email to check out a band.
I initially assumed it was because the sender recognized my articles from this site and understood at an intrinsic, molecular level that I am the future of heavy metal blogging.
Ha. He was unfamiliar with us at the Toilet Ov Hell offices, but I was happy to fill him in. It turns out we were both in luck that day. Bran learned about our site, and I discovered a band called Coma Cluster Void for the first time.
The pedigree of the band members involved is what really grabbed my attention. Coma Cluster Void will feature the aforementioned Will Smith on vocals, along with Mike DiSalvo (vocals), John Strieder (guitars), Sylvia Hinz (bass), and Chris Burrows (drums). Mike DiSalvo has done vocals for Cryptopsy, who have also been covered here at the Toilet Ov Hell.
Coma Cluster Void was previously covered by Vince Neilstein at Metalsucks. Vince made much of the fact that this is “ten string guitar death metal”, and recommended this band for fans of Ulcerate, Nero di Marte, Dysrythmia, and Portal… but how are the songs?
We could easily call last year the “year of dissonant skronk” – apart from the tremendous amount of hideous sludge and great black metal that was released in 2014. Dissonant skronk is a thing, and a lot of people around here like that shit. You guys are in luck. This four track demo brings the dissonant skronk. It brings the deathy math and the mathy death. It earns its avant-garde label in spades. This four track demo is still in the skeletal phase of its creation. It features a slow churning, deep space interlude, a minute plus from a track labeled “Petrified Tears”, a minute plus from another track called “Drowning in Sorrow”, and thirty seconds of a different as of yet untitled track. These tracks sound monstrous. I’m interested to hear the final versions of these songs – especially with dual vocals from Smith and DiSalvo. More information about this band would be welcome, but I am anticipating a 2015 release.
You can also check out Coma Cluster Void demos on Soundcloud, like the band on Facebook, and if you really dig this demo you can pick up a tee shirt to support them.
For the curious: The Coma Cluster (Abell 1656) is a large cluster of galaxies that contains over 1,000 identified galaxies. Along with the Leo Cluster (Abell 1367), it is one of the two major clusters comprising the Coma Supercluster. It is located in and takes its name from the constellation Coma Berenices.
