It’s Spooky Season
This week, we’ve got star coffins, a porcine cudgel, and an ophidian oubliette. As is their wont, our myriad warsiblings have released a gargantuan log of albums for your poo-rusal in the week leading up to Halloween. Lumsk – Einsemda (Dark Essence Records) [Prog Folk Rock / Post-Metal]
There was no chance I’d miss another opportunity to highlight the sumptuous prog folk rock served up by this Norwegian septet; in the three years since Fremmede Toner, I’ve written no less than a novelette about this densely-layered masterpiece, and spun the album countless times in my trusty Civic. In secret, I despaired that any future output would inevitably pale in comparison, but as the preview tracks from Einsemda show, Mari Klingen & Co. have inspired songwriting to spare. “Haust på Torget” unfolds in the manner of a post-metal epic, gently ramping up in intensity from its isolated vocal and piano/synth intro to a prog rock dance of staccato violin and guitar riffing. By the end of the 9-minute journey, lush chords and double bass reach a thrilling crescendo, and combined with another stellar vocal performance from Klingen, I can’t help but restart the track immediately. Obviously, I’m a drooling fan-owl for Lumsk, and your mileage may vary, but prog hawgs will definitely find much to love this Friday. -Roldy
