Thanatomania – Punire (Independent) [Black]
Punire eschews the sharp aesthetics and production typical of black metal; instead, a funerary drape rests over the downtrodden riffing, softening the edges without sacrificing clarity. The morose atmosphere evokes Agalloch‘s doomiest (Hawthorne) passages, and there’s a gentle post-metal melodicism throughout, even in the blasty sections. Like the haunting album art, the music within is relatively simple—composed with a limited palette—but the band’s mastery of a few fundamentals allows something deeply impactful to emerge. From the percussive bass tone to the muted hum of the tremolo riffs, it’s easy to submerge oneself in Thanatomania’s vision; just remember to fight if you see a strange light approaching in the distance. -Roldy
