This Toilet Tuesday (12/20/22)
‘Twas the week before Christmas/And all through the house/Not an album was releasing/Because it’s past the point where most metal writers are thinking about stuff to add to their year-end lists. This week brings us but a paltry selection of new albums, but hey, maybe it’s for the best- I can’t be the only one still finding and adding new things to my backlog right now. There’s not a ton down there, so finding the good shit shouldn’t be too much work.
Kossuth – Necronym (Independent) [Tech Death]
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve gotten a full release from Kossuth (Mictlan came out all the way back in 2015!? Fuck), and they’ve returned with a refreshed lineup and much sharper sound. The most obvious upgrade is in the production- it sounds sooo much crisper and cleaner than their last outing- but the real good shit is in the new approach to composition. Mictlan was good by-the-books melodic tech death, but if the single out now is any indication, Necronym is going to delve into some hitherto unexplored progressive territory. It still hangs onto the melodicism of the previous release, but structure is far less predictable, and the melodies themselves have a lot more unique character to them. If you’re into tech, this is one to be excited about. 12/21/22 (Spear)
