The Listener – Where Hatred Reigns Supreme (Independent) [Blackened Death/Doom / Metalcore]
Despite the ornithological violence depicted in the artwork, I’m enamored with The Listener’s seamless blend of genres. “Soul Torture” transmutes dissoblack to southern sludge within its first minute, just before OSDM stank and Nevermore‘s dour theatricality join the fray. Second single “Hate Supreme” is more streamlined, but even this track manages to fit together beatdown hardcore and blue castle black metal without becoming a tangle of vambraces and gold chains. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of this strange beast on Friday, but even moreso, I wish to experience the crowd at one of their shows; I can only imagine it would be an eclectic mix of sights, sounds, and of course, smells. -Roldy
