This week we’ve got motorcycle doom, enough symphonic metal to crush you under the sheer weight of the cheese, and chiptune death of the most avant-garde order. The water is thicker than fondue this time around—you’d best be wearing two pairs of flippers.
Celestial Sanctuary – Insatiable Thirst For Torment (Church Road Records) [Death]
These Cambridge lads may claim to be “Caveman Shit” on Bandcamp, but I’ve learned a few words just from reading the tracklist! (From context clues, I believe “Swivel Eyed and Gurning in the Shadows” is about making a stankface at a concert.) Thankfully, the death metal on display arrives sans PhD. The grooves, Suffo-slams (“Biomineralization (Cell Death)”), and eerie melodies are simple, but the extended range riffing and frequent tempo shifts keep the songs interesting. Trace elements of doom and hardcore surface throughout the available tracks, only cementing the likeliness one will gurn whilst listening. -Roldy
