Vile Rites – Senescence (Carbonized Records) [Prog Death]
Like the majestic mollusc adorning their debut LP, Vile Rites’ style is both elastic and multifaceted. Meloblack riffs flow seamlessly into lush post-metal in “Shiftless Wanderings,” and “Senescent” merges OSDM groove with psychedelic flourishes to mirror the beauty and danger of our oceans. There’s an uneasy energy within these songs that shift in color and shape so readily; anxiety and curiosity intertwine as listeners detect minute changes in the currents around them, each cymbal fill or leitmotif forming a lurking shadow that could be death or the harmless swaying of seaweed. Thankfully, Greg Wilkinson’s production keeps the band’s vision clear, never letting the complexity of the compositions muddy the waters. -Roldy
