The Best Band in Illinois is Deus Ex
Back in August we asked you to help us find the best unsigned bands in America. After listening to hundreds of submissions, we’ve finally narrowed down our pick for the ritziest state in the Midwest: The best band in Illinois is a one-man project called Deus Ex.
*Full disclosure: Deus Ex is the project of CyberneticOrganism, an advanced robot who writes about noise, beer, and BDubs for the Toilet ov Hell. There were several band submissions for Illinois and we believe Deus Ex is the best. You’re free to accuse us of nepotism (I will assure you this was not the case), but you should really give these songs a listen first.
When not writing for the Toilet, CyberneticOrganism (who sometimes goes by the human name “Jon”), creates dark industrial metal. Since 2006, Jon has been working on Deus Ex (not to be confused with the video game series, you fucking nerd). In May of 2013, he released his first full-length: Corrosive Genesis. The album is a dark and crushing affair with mechanized drums, cinematic keyboards, and tormented howls. It is the exact album I want from an evil android.
CyberneticOrganism:
“First off, let me thank the glorious lifehaters at TOH who took the time to check out and vote for Deus Ex. You have all been guaranteed a prime spot in The Void! The overall concept of Corrosive Genesis is the manifestation of a divine entity from a mortal being, one who believes he is destined to assume his own, rightful place in the endless pantheon of gods over the millenia, the ultimate and final god to end the memory of all others who came before. Once his mortal shell is finally shed, his wish is fulfilled as he is born into a divine form, yet not as the powerful, encompassing idol he intended, but rather an ashen, eroded god who holds dominion over a barren, derelict and failed plane of existence. From the instant of his ascent, he is a slave to a broken realm. Thus, he destroys his empty world and buries himself within its ruin.”
Here’s what our judges had to say:
W: “Deus Ex is the sound of a mechanical monstrosity gaining consciousness and amalgamating a weapons manufacturer plant full of industrial equipment and deadly munitions into its hardened and deadly exoskeleton. Downtuned, Fear Factory-esque riffs meet industrial drums and eerie electronic atmospheres to craft a beast of whirring and clicking hatred hellbent on destroying you.”
Masterlord SteelDragon: “Deus Ex is a blackened, industrial tribute to the inevitable extinction of mankind by the iron fists of things made of iron. There should be a little something for everyone in Corrosive Genesis. Especially if you’re a robit. Kill all humans!”
Honorable Mention:
Shavasana – Jazzy (seriously; they’ve got horns n’ shit), experimental death metal from Chicago, IL. Check ’em on Facebook and Bandcamp.
The Toilet ov Hell is on an absurd quest to find the best unsigned band in each state of this glorious union. The purpose? To shine the spotlight on bands that deserve more exposure. Also, we’re going to determine once and for all the greatest state in the nation. Each state winner is decided by a collection of 25 judges. After we’ve announced the winner of each state, we’re gonna throw them all in a winner-take-all bracket and leave the votes up to you. Who will be the best unsigned band in the United States? Which state is superior? We can’t wait to find out.
