Premiere: Fuck Your Birthday – Afterlife

Piss on your Christmas.

New Jersey-based label Nefarious Industries have been quietly killing it for years. They’ve scorched our sacks with Nequient, fed us Bionatops, rent our feels with The DRX. They may not be the biggest nor loudest label, but they always bring the goods. The goods keep coming and this time they come with a slice of cake.

Fuck Your Birthday is a two-piece indie rock band with connections running from West Virginia to New York City to Wenzhou, China. Amazingly, Fuck Your Birthday booked their own DIY tour of China. Twice. Remember that the next time one of your band mates complains about playing a show out-of-state. It wasn’t just sight-seeing and show playing, though. The band recorded while they were in China at a music store/recording studio called Passion Music. Those incredibly cool efforts have given birth to the band’s sophomore album Maydays, and we’re happy to premiere the second single off it, “Afterlife”.

“Afterlife” drips with an earnest sound that is as catchy as it is sneeringly in-your-face. It reminds me of when I used to stay up late in high school, recording college radio shows to cassette, and just hoping the DJ actually says what they’re playing. This is the type of song that I would have loved to find on Napster and force my friends to listen to. In the age of crystal clear production in million-dollar studios, Fuck Your Birthday is a welcome throwback to a time when bands just said “Fuck it. Let’s record an album and hit the road.”
Guitarist Christopher Henry says:
“‘Afterlife’ is a song about King-Tutting a few key pieces of equipment that are integral to the FYB sound. And also pulling a Viva-la-Bam and doing whatever the fuck you want, e.g. making shitty art.”
If there’s one thing Toilet Ov Hell can get behind, it’s making shitty art. In support of the release, Fuck Your Birthday has scheduled the following live dates:

05.16 Morgantown, WV @ 123 Pleasant Street (link)

05.23 Brooklyn, NY @ Tender Trap (link)

05.24 Brooklyn, NY @ The Well (link)

Maydays is out on June 8th. You can pre-order it here. Listen to more tunes on Bandcamp and give them a like on Facebook.
