Egocide – Mortichnia (Dusktone) [Death / Hardcore]
When I saw the grainy, monochrome artwork and heard the isolated bass intro, I was sure the album would be a serviceable (if unremarkable) burst of grind or crust punk; perhaps it’s time for my own Egocide, as apparently I know bupkis. Mortichnia, the band’s sophomore LP, forms a collage of extreme sounds: Man Must Die‘s mechanistic deathgrind collides with sludgy triplets à la Morbid Angel in preview track “Afterborn Inhuman Abortion,” and that’s before the blackened hardcore influence bares its teeth. Genre cross-pollination is nothing new, but it’s the minute details; the unexpected pivots in well-trod styles that make Mortichnia such an exhilarating listen. -Roldy
