Welcome back to Tag Diving! It’s been a couple of weeks, so in case you forgot, this is the crapper’s weekly-ish column where I, the beloved Reliquary Tower, dig through the metaphorical trash can of Bandcamp much like one would a dingy dumpster. Except I’m not looking for gently-used toothpicks, oh no no no, I’m looking for something even tastier: I’m looking for riffs. And with it being the Halloween season, I figured I’d keep things topical. Let’s check out some truly terrifying tunes!

Mortician – From the Casket

Have you ever listened to those old Mortician demos? Matt Sicher was an absolute monster of a drummer, and while I certainly don’t mind their decision to use a drum machine after his passing, none of it hits quite like the older stuff for me. Even if you’ve heard these tracks on Hacked Up For Barbecue, there’s something special about the demo versions that’ll definitely make them worth your while.

Liquid Rot – Gutted

All you have to do to get me to listen to your death metal album is make the album art look like that. No, seriously, that’s it. That’s all it takes. But if you want me to keep listening to your death metal album, all you have to do is make the music sound like this. These Italian newcomers seem to have taken an x-ray of my heart and discovered that fairly lo-fi thrashy death metal will always have a place in it. Right now this is their only release, but I’m excited for whatever they’ve got coming next!

Portal – Outre

Awwww yeah, the Reliquary Tower special! My enjoyment of Portal is well-documented ‘round these parts and Outre is in constant competition with Seepia for my favorite release. If you’ve ever listened to a blackened death metal album and thought “This is neat and all, but I wish they’d actually just reach out of my earbuds and try to kill me,” this is the band for you.
