Infected Dead – Invicta (Independent) [Tech Death]
Infected Dead’s debut falls somewhere between early Revocation‘s playful rhythms and the mechanistic, modern tech of Metasphæra; the result is an EP equally capable of extending your brow ridge back to the Pleistocene and etching fresh wrinkles in that raw chicken breast you call a brain. Tracks like “In Spaces Beyond” veer quickly between riffing styles—like the OSDM tremolos and triplet chugs that lead to neoclassical shredding around the song’s halfway point—but the change-ups feel organic, rather than a rat’s nest of ideas thrown together in the name of technicality. Vocalist Lou Ede’s phlegmy rasps remind me of the most unhinged moments of The Red Chord‘s first album; his wide range suits the adventurous compositions like a glove spiked gauntlet, which begs the question: what kind of wild performances can we expect when the whole record releases this Friday?
