Flush It Friday: Run the Gamut

Diversify yo’ bonds.

A few weeks ago, or whenever it was, we went to see Contention and a slew of other bands at a local DIY venue. Days Spent, playing the penultimate set, stole the show from the South Florida bruisers. Just last week the band released a two-song EP. Side A “Big Man” starts off sounding like Suicide File’s “Song for Tonite” and ends with something akin to Cruel Hand’s Prying Eyes. “Living With” keeps up the crossover vibes on Side B, bolstered by Nancy Crozier’s poignant, piercing lyrics and vicious and crystal-clear vocals. Check out the rest of the band’s oeuvre.

marine eyes, the Past Inside the Present mainstay led by Cynthia Bernard, released hidden hour on Bernard’s new label cloud collecting last month. It is one of the few things I’ve listened to in that time. When the rush and the push is too exciting and intoxicating and dizzying, there’s hidden hour, a sneaking-away-from-it-all kind of immersive seclusion. It’s an alcove, a recess, a retreat. Bernard’s notes for the album document a life being lived fully, a life of movement and wonder that creates pockets of stillness all the more evocative. There’s always space, always a hidden hour or two.

Never ones to be accused of haste, it’s been five years since Throes’ split with Great Falls and seven long years since the suffocating In the Hands of an Angry God. Now, the Boise quartet returns with The Colorless Light of Emptiness on Church Road Records. I keep getting stuck on the joylessness of “Joy.” Rumbling and feedback-scarred, it is, like the rest of the album, a blackened, sludgy post-hardcore juggernaut. It is, like the rest of the album, nothing but bad news and bad feelings and bad vibes. If they played the last riff any longer, we’d be over.
