EP Premiere: Kybalion – Make The World Bleed

Is there a better pairing than darkness and black metal? A dumb question I know, but what if that darkness wasn’t spooky forests and evil Hell-lords? What if the subject matter were a bit more serious and poignant to our actual lives? If this is something that tickles your fancy even slightly, then do we have something for you. It comes from new(ish) Italian black metal unit Kybalion and for something so small in stature, it packs a ferocious punch. As stated by the band,
“Make the World Bleed” takes its premise from Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s novel “Der Verdacht” (“The Suspect”), as it bare-handed tries to scratch the surface of ‘Evil”s nature, digging into restless underground rivers of unsettling truths. Evil comes not from cold calculation, but rather from the inescapable realisation that humans are meaningless atom groups moving in space, and therefore absolute, free beings. There’s no God, no absolute Truth, no everlasting, all-knowing Judge to care for us. The disheartening result of this is humanity’s innate need for restraint, control, and absolute power over its peers.
“Un animale che si mette le briglie da solo non dovrebbe mai conoscere la libertà”. “An animal that puts reins on itself should never know freedom”.
An idea presented via musical vehicle is hardly novel, but within the 4 tracks of Make the World Bleed, you are taken on a brisk yet memorable black metal journey. Pulling heavily from the slightly more melodic influences of second wave stalwarts, Kybalion execute a tight, chilling performance and message in a 12-minute journey that is engaging as it is brief. Also, they have the temerity to include such things as haunting spoken word and even an ambient track to drag you through the murky atmosphere. A truly impressive task in such a short and easily digestible morsel of the dark and depressive.
Make the World Bleed releases Friday, June 5th through Non Serviam Records.
