Premiere: Coal & Crayon – The Great Misgive
Lighten up, then get a little dark with it, then undo that several times over.
Despite falling into the genre-bucket I practically wear on my head, I have somehow been blind to Coal & Crayon (see: bucket on head) until this track was pushed across my desk. This German group has mastered the heavy post-rock with a progressive tinge sound that scratches a lot of itches for me. It’s catchy and memorable without being obvious, and is wildly dynamic in intensity.
“The Great Misgive” is a perfect example of what you should expect from the upcoming self-titled record. You get whiplash between excellent clean vocals with intricate melodies and chunkier riffs and aggressive growls. If you’re a fan of the lighter side of fellow Germans The Ocean or The Hirsch Effekt, you’ll dig this.

“The Great Misgive” marks not only the first song the band wrote for the new album Coal & Crayon but also the “turning point” of the record, which is split into two halves: “Coal” and “Crayon.” The song serves as the dividing line that leads into the mellower “Crayon” section. Like “Ember,” this track processes deeply personal experiences. A breakup, whether from a former band, a friend, or a long-term partner, can be both painful and liberating. “The Great Misgive” focuses on the most painful realization accompanying a separation: the insight that the relationship ended not because of a lack of love, but because of a lack of belief in oneself.
