Welcome once again to This Toilet Tuesday! This is an excellent week for metal of all types; no matter what you listen to, there should be something here to wet your whistle. Hans, Bert Banana, and I have gathered a couple of standouts for you to check out, but there’s a lot more good to be found in the list. Peruse that at your leisure and share your own finds with us.

Eagle Twin – The Thundering Heard (Songs of Hoof and Horn) (Southern Lord) [Sludge/Doom]
Listen to “Heavy Hoof”

I was a little surprised about the drunken pirate yarl that is the intro to this song, but the album is based around that sweet-ass elk on the cover (part of a storyline apparently spanning three albums now), so maybe this is supposed to mimic an elk’s bellowing. It works better when accompanied by the music, in this case thundering, fuzzy riffs with a bit of slightly bluesy, southern-ish swagger to them. More for the doom than the sludge fan; think Bongripper and Conan but with hella guitar solos. 3/30/18 (Hans)

Jesus Ain’t in Poland – No Man’s Land (Grindpromotion Records) [Grindcore]
Stream

The sole “grind” release of the week. The whole thing is streaming on Bandcamp, so jump on this and thank me later. This is a rather creative and ambitious release. Yeah, there’s a lot of grind elements in it but I wouldn’t call it a grind album. Looking around the areas of Nasum, Rotten Sound, and Gadget. However, this just spirals into a solid doom album at the halfway point. They layer in some death metal as a transition from grind to doom. I feel it works well. Once you hit track 7, they start incorporating more melodies. The riffs are fantastic on this. Some real nice grooves littered all over this album. The production is clean, but it works very well for what they are trying to accomplish. There’s a lot to digest with this album, so I would recommend this as a sit at home album where you can give it a little more attention. 3/30/18 (Bert Banana)

Immense – Slaughter of Brutality (Brutal Mind) [Brutal Death Metal]
Listen to “Internaly [sic] Scars”

I believe it was Benjamin Franklin that once said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and brutal death metal from South East Asia being dank as fuck.” Pretty sure he said that…if he didn’t, well, he should have. For whatever reason, South East Asia has this genre on lock. While this JAKARTA FUCKING BRUTAL FUCKING DEATH BAND doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it delivers the fucking goods. Obscene blast beats, nasty fucking slam riffs and sweet, sweet br00tal vo-kills that made us all fall in love with the genre in the first place. The 1:51 mark of the single “Internaly Scars” has this dope riff that’s tailored made to get that pit fucking going. This isn’t groundbreaking shit but it takes everything that is good and unholy about the genre to bring some really, meaty Death Metal. I would recommend cranking this on the commute home, with the windows down, while stuck in traffic. Belt out those death growls and pulverize that steering wheel. Let everyone around know about your advanced level of road rage. 3/31/18 (Bert Banana)

Within Destruction – Deathwish (Rising Nemesis Records) [Deathcore pretending to be slam]
Listen to “Human Defect”

Watching the video for the single, “Human Defect,” I couldn’t help but laugh. They have the standard Eastern European slam look; grills, braids, high end cars- an image that comes straight out of a 2000’s rap video. However, upon closer inspection… it’s satirical. The ending is amazing, and if you know your slam, you’ll be laughing. However, don’t start drawing comparisons to bands like Epicardiectomy with that slam that Granny can keep up with. Nah, this is some top-notch deathcore with slam that goes hard and fast as fuck. Some absolutely, bone crushing slam breakdowns all up in this motherfucker. Get those fucking arms ready because you’re going to be throwing hammers for fucking days. The drummer is a fucking machine. The blast beats and those oh so sweet gravity blasts hit that spot that is oh so satisfying. Honestly, the vocals are great, especially for deathcore, but those ear-piercing pig squeals… fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. That’s what I’m talking about right there. Brie with Bree. The production is clean and well mixed. I would suggest checking out their last album, Void. It’s well done and it’s got some tech for all my tech death homies out there to get into. 3/30/18 (Bert Banana)

Sentient Horror – The Crypts Below (Redefining Darkness/Testimony) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Bled Dry by the Night”

Set aside four minutes of your time for “Bled Dry by the Night;” you’ll want to hear this. Sentient Horror lay down some grindy, thrashy death metal with an affinity for classic Swedeath- certainly nothing new, but god damn do they know what they’re doing. The pacing is perfect, they nail the tone, and the solo is surprisingly competent. This is likely going to be the nastiest thing you hear all day. 3/30/18 (Spear)
