Toss rain, a sold-out room, and four bands ready to make noise together at 529 in East Atlanta Village, and you get one memorable Saturday night.

While storms rolled through and may have complicated everyone’s plans — even with the Shaky Knees Festival happening the same weekend — they weren’t going to keep this crowd away.

If you’ve ever been inside 529 for a sold-out show, you know how intimate things can get. With the room packed tight, the crowd filled nearly every bit of available space and made the night feel even louder and more immediate.

Leafblower

Atlanta’s own Leafblower kicked the night off, bringing the noise and quite a bit of support from the local scene, which may be small compared to others, but is extremely loyal.

Right out of the gate, they delivered a set that got the evening started without needing much introduction. With the hometown crowd behind them, Leafblower set the tone for an aggressive and loud night.

No/Más

D.C.’s No/Más came ready to melt faces with a punishing mix of hardcore and extreme metal. Their sonic assault brought plenty of action to the pit as the crowd responded to the intensity coming from the stage.

And what better way for a D.C. band to close out its set than with a cover of Bad Brains’ “Banned in D.C.”? A fitting nod to their hometown’s hardcore heritage and a hell of a way to finish.

Whores.

You know a band has the hometown crowd behind them when you keep hearing people yell, “I fucking love Whores!” and “I love Whores!” throughout the room.

Atlanta’s own Whores. had no shortage of support, and the crowd made damn sure they knew it.

In a venue the size of 529, it’s quite a sight to see the entire packed room bounce like that.

Whores. are clearly local favorites, and Saturday night’s crowd wasn’t shy about showing its appreciation.

EYEHATEGOD

New Orleans sludge legends Eyehategod brought the evening to a close with a constant wall of crushing, low-end guitars and abrasive vocals.

There was also another reason to celebrate: guitarist Jimmy Bower’s birthday.

The band’s punishing sound was right at home in the confines of 529. With the room sold out and little space to move, there was no escaping that crushing low end, which seemed to vibrate to my very core.

A fittingly heavy end to a night that had already delivered plenty of noise.

Closing Thoughts

Four bands, a sold-out room, and enough volume to make you forget about the weather outside.

Between the local support for Leafblower and Whores., the pit action during No/Más, and Eyehategod’s crushing finale, East Atlanta Village had itself one hell of a Saturday night.

The rain may have made getting there a little less pleasant, but it certainly didn’t dampen the evening.
