Crimson Coven – I – The Forge (Cruz del Sur Music) [Doom / Heavy Metal]
While I’m an absolute mark for the latest technical everythingcore, something about the autumn season always draws me back to simple comforts; perhaps it’s the coziness of a well-worn uglysleeves, or album art that recalls the pages of a cherished book. Whatever the case, Crimson Coven have me bewitched through their mix of mid-paced, magisterial riffing, harmonized lead guitars, and epic heavy metal atmosphere. (Throw in some chanting monks and the world is your cloister.) Where most epic/trad metal loses me is the vocal department—too often, the singer can’t carry a note nearly as well as they can a zweihander—but this is not the case in the eponymous preview track. The soaring performance reminds me of Stephen Fredrick on the debut Firewind LP: tinged with melancholy, occasionally gruff, and devoid of falsetto cheese. (Not that there’s anything wrong with falsetto cheese, some of my favorite witchcraft-related metal is full of it!) Get in the cauldron, dummy. The coven convenes this Friday. -Roldy
