I think there’s a chance you’ll like Chants

Let me bring you in on a little secret. Something new and exciting, just clamoring for you to consume its atmospheric offerings of the blackened sort. You see, this debuting Portuguese outfit is so new that even those smelly know-it-alls at the Metal Archives are void of their presence. However, since you happen to know a really cool guy (that’s me btw if you couldn’t tell), you can be in the cool kid’s club with this impressive track.

Chants have channeled their craft into cementing their names in the emotion-laden and grandiose atmospheric black metal realm alongside others such as Groza and Uada, but perhaps the starkest comparison would be to that of fellow countrymen Gaerea (but good). Coming from a label with such a phenomenal track record as Everlasting Spew certainly appears favorable to this band’s reputation already.

On single “Chants,” we are introduced to a somber yet heartfelt soundscape of the instruments as they encapsulate you with their airiness and drifting nature. That is until about 2 minutes in when the discordant guitars and raspy wails interject with the energy needed to carry the remainder of the runtime. Another minute races by when the false modesty drops and the bombastic, yet morose waves finally take you over. The drums create space, then suffocate it moments later with blasts, only to return to allow you to breathe again as the track reaches its conclusion. Utilizing lyrics to match the musicality such as “Echoes of the past, In the starlight they last” allows the saddening but still uplifting totality of the entire package to resonate.

Echoes releases November 20th on Everlasting Spew Records. Don’t forget to peek the killer long sleeve.
