Flush It Friday: The Last Age Is Here

Crossover appeal.
Formed in 2005 in Austin, Texas, Iron Age released both The Butcher’s Bill EP on Lockin Out and their first LP Constant Struggle on Youngblood Records in 2006. More than any band from the early/mid-aughts, Iron Age took Leeway‘s Born to Expire and Cro Mags‘ Best Wishes, dusted ’em off, gave ’em a spit shine, and brought this kind of NYHC back to the fore. Simply, Constant Struggle is hard as hell. Look no further than the thrash-infused “We’re Dust/The Violator,” “Evil Ways,” and “Twisted Faith.” To rush to the point: Constant Struggle was an event in the hardcore world.
By 2009, the band had evolved into what would ultimately be their final form. Decidedly more metal than hardcore, Iron Age’s second and final album The Sleeping Eye called upon the Gods of Thunder and Leather to bring a ripping, righteous fury. There are moments of trad, doom, and speed metal splattered about, giving the record a fuller, more realized feel. “Sleeping Eye of the Watcher,” “Burden of Empire,” and “Arcana Pt 1,” in particular, are the band’s crowning achievements. Crossover perfected. It’s not unreasonable to say that the band Power Trip would become is impossible without The Sleeping Eye.
It is unsurprising, then, that vocalist Jason Tarpey, drummer Jared Allison, and guitarist Wade Allison (RIP) would form Eternal Champion a year after Iron Age called it quits.
