Flush It Friday: Thermos of Potato Leek

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

You’ll not find many albums more ferociously fun than Glorious Depravity’s Death Never Sleeps, out today on Transcending Obscurity. Featuring an absolute smorgasbord of big names, including the Sexiest Dude in Metal Doug Moore, Glorious Depravity is burst-out-the-gate and burst-through-your-chest Floridian death metal with all praises due to Morbid Angel and Deicide. Back-to-back rippers “Sulphrous Winds” and “Scourged by the Wings of the Fell Destroyer” give you two scoops of relentless riffing and coordinated chaos. No surprise that the production quality is clear and punchy, while Seagrave’s art makes for a classy finish to an album full of classic sounds.

That dude who rhymes wild shit like “motherboard” with “cruller form” is back with I Heard It’s a Mess There, Too. When the album surprise-dropped at the end of October, I wasn’t particularly interested, but once openers “Crystals and Herbs” and “The Cut” got their stripped-down hooks in me, I was cooked. Aes Rock’s consonants are as plosive as the album’s drum tracks, and the quirky basslines and odd flourishes in each track are just enough to make everything feel all the starker and grimmer. Even those usual lyrical acrobatics seem a bit reined in, harnessed all the more effectively.

There’s been a lot of blockheaded shit about hardcore around the Bowl lately. Careful, lest these twitter fingers turn to trigger fingers. Rather than rebutting the nonsense with facts like Blacklisted is a more interesting and better band than Black Flag, we’ll double-down on the current iterations of beatdown that represent but a sliver of hardcore. PeelingFlesh are back with two tracks of tasteful dust-bowl slam, while Hounds of War heard the chatter and said batter’s up before swinging a spiked bat at your medulla oblongata. “Reaper on Speed Dial” is a rabid dog with a mouth full of bees.

A fun little throwback? Both Aesop Rock and Glorious Depravity made it on Lacertilian’s 2020 year-end list.
