This broken clock is right every time of the day.

We here are no strangers to Dysgnostic (formerly Defilementory), with Hans having introduced us to them back in 2022 with their debut, Scar Echoes, and Brock just recently heralding the approach of their sophomore effort. As the release of End Whispers draws ever nearer, the band has invited us to partake of this cataclysmic susurrus with the premiere of “The Shattered Timekeeper.” See what the band has to say about the album:

We’ve all heard them, the whispers from beyond the edge, the feeling that collapse is just around the corner, lurking just outside the field of vision. The implacable feeling that something is deeply wrong. These are End Whispers, they both beckon and repel.

After Scar Echoes, we wanted to chase the essence of what is us as a band. Not deliberately try to steer it any specific way. The result is somehow both more accessible and more dense.

That self-assessment is remarkably accurate. As impenetrable as the opening chords of “The Shattered Timekeeper” may seem, they are repeated and restated in a slow hypnotic churn that immerses you in the haze, allowing you to acclimate to its harsh atmosphere. Its pummeling middle section will feel like familiar ground for fans of more straightforward death metal, eventually swirling back around to its opening chords, though its methodical intro will make its layers of clashing melody feel less oblique. Making something this harsh but approachable is no mean feat; the impression I get from Dysgnostic is that they are to Gorguts what their labelmates Devenial Verdict are to Morbid Angel. They play to similar strengths as their predecessors but with their own unique take, and it’s a sound that I find intoxicating.
