This Toilet Tuesday (1/26/21)
Hey, that’s a lot of new music. Best not keep you waiting; just know that this week is actually pretty solid all around, and you’re likely to find something to slam your jams down there. Hans and I have picked out a couple chunky death metal records for your enjoyment, but if that’s not your thing, a) why not? and b) there’s almost certainly something else down there for you. Werewolves – What a Time to Be Alive (Prosthetic Records) [Death Metal]

Oooh careful there, don’t cut yourself on that edge. If you can get past that though (which may be tough), you’ll find some very blasting, very competent, and actually pretty fun tech-ish death metal performed by members of Psycroptic, Blood Duster, Akercocke, and uhh… The Berzerker, who apparently are still active according to MA. I always liked to joke that Eximperitus spent more time writing their song titles than the music itself, but the longest name on this album is a measly nine characters. Guess I’ll have to actually judge the music by its own merits this time, which is bullshit. The good news is that the music is fucking fantastic, finding itself at a confluence of Lykathea Aflame, Nile, and Atrae Bilis stylings with some extremely Azagthoth-ass lead guitar work complementing the monster riffs. It’s a refinement of everything on Prajecyrujučy sinhuliarnaje wypramieńwańnie Daktryny Absaliutnaha j Usiopahłynaĺnaha Zła skroź šaścihrannuju pryzmu Sîn-Ahhī-Erība na hipierpawierchniu zadyjakaĺnaha kaŭčęha zasnawaĺnikaŭ kosmatęchničnaha ordęna palieakantakta, najstaražytnyja ipastasi dawosiewych cywilizacyj prywodziać u ruch ręzanansny transfarmatar časowapadobnaj biaskoncaści budučyni u ćwiardyniach absierwatoryi etc. etc. in a more focused package that really leans into the “mystical” aspect of their sound and is, in my opinion, much stronger for it. 1/29/21 (Spear)
