Aduanten – Apocryphal Verse (Nameless Grave Records) [Post-Black / Melodeath]
Preview track “Grace of Departure” is an intriguing mix of Agallochian post-black (replete with phaser-drenched clean tones) and splinters of myriad styles that forms a cohesive whole. From scraping OSDM vocals to punk rhythms and melodeath tremolos (I’m reminded of Amon Amarth and Vanum), the song refuses to stay in one mode; I suppose it’s inevitable when the band includes members of such disparate acts as Panopticon, Obsequiae, Horrendous, and Vex. Much like the collage adorning Apocryphal Verse, the music’s genre boundaries are an approximation—borders that shift and draw attention to different aspects with each listen. -Roldy
