This week we’ve got death from the AtlanTECH ocean, one of 69,420 bands called VOID, and an undying fetus. The bowl-water is choppy this week, but if you remain vigilant, you’re likely to find something worth the wade.
Aterrima – A Name Engraved in Cold Soil (Fiadh Productions) [Experimental Blackened Death]
You ever find yourself wondering what it would sound like if Cormorant and Wilderun consummated their love for one another and had offspring? Yeah, me neither, but if you were to wonder that, you fucking pervert, that bastard lovechild in your sick musings would likely sound a lot like Aterrima. At least, it would sound a lot like “Lily of the Valley,” the only single currently up on their Bandcamp; I don’t want to judge this solely on this song, because this sounds like the sort of thing that could cover a lot of musical ground. This tune has the feel of a long-form prog death odyssey condensed to its most vital five minutes, replete with exploratory riffing and fatty bass lines, rounded out with a shoegazy break partway through. Whether this is representative of the album as a whole or just a small taste of what it will ultimately offer, it’s bound to be a great listen. 12/8/23 (Spear)
