This Toilet Tuesday (3/17/15)
Welcome, my fellow flushers, to This Toilet Tuesday! Spring is nearly here: the sun is shining, the days are becoming longer, and the temperature is bearable once again. This all makes it very hard to not be a little bit of a lifelover and thus I have relocated to a sewer, where I can continue writhing in the murk. This week also has a pretty solid showing beyond what W, Leif, and I have covered here, so don’t be afraid to dive into that list down there. Have at it!
C-4 – Death in the Moshpit (Independent) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Puppet Corpse”
There must be something in the water in the Polish grind scene, because every band that’s crawled out of that sewer is nasty, nasty, nasty. Blending an unapologetically punky assault with deep guttural growls reminiscent of the mating calls of a male silverback gorilla, C-4 brings the pain. There isn’t much more to say about it except, “GRIND!”. FFO: Straight Hate, Speedy Gonzalez, Phosphorathic (W.)
Simbiose – Trapped (Anticorpos Records) [Crust]
Stream
I’m on a grind roll today. However, if you like your grind with a much more high energy and DIY vibe to it, might I suggest Simbiose? Trapped features a much, much crustier take on the style than that played by C-4. Oddly enough, though, there’s a ton of unexpected melody on this record. Even if you don’t understand the Portuguese lyrics, you’re still going to be moshing. Grind it out. FFO: Cretin, Yattai, Trap Them (W.)
Funerus – The Black Death (Dark Descent) [Death Metal]
Listen to “The Black Death”
Funerus has been around for what seems like an eternity and have relatively little back catalog to show for it. However, I am a believer of quality over quantity and their latest EP, The Black Death, is certainly a quality release. It knows just how long to pummel you before giving you a breather via some sweetly sludgy riffage. If you prefer your death with a little doom then this EP will be right up your alley. Plus, who doesn’t want that album art showing up in their music collection? (Leif Bearikson)
Serenity In Murder – The Highest of Dystopia (Spiritual Beast/Universal Music) [Melodeath]
Preview
I have a huge soft spot for big, dramatic, soaring melodic death metal bands, and Serenity In Murder deliver that in spades. The overall feel of the album is that of a more hyper Insomnium; blistering riffs and solos are accompanied by piano melodies and warm synths in a perfect complement. Despite the slightly silly name, The Highest of Dystopia is a solid melodeath album. (Spear)
