This Toilet Tuesday (3/29/16)
Greetings, flushers, and welcome to Toilet Tuesday! This week marks the start of April, which looks to be nothing short of amazing for metal this year. A handful of those are coming already, and Jom Pootersan, W, and I have picked a select few you shouldn’t miss. Cast your ears on them first, and then your eyes on that list below.
Setentia – Darkness Transcend (Independent) [Progressive Death Metal]
Stream
I woke up this morning and thought to myself, “Man, I could really use some progressive death metal with tasty dissonance, soaring solos, and clever construction, but I’m fresh out of new Ulcerate.” Thankfully, I stumbled upon Darkness Transcend, the debut full length from Setentia, and it had everything my heart desired. More importantly than those individual elements though is the combined package of towering, excellent songs and a compelling listen from start to finish. The year of killer death metal debuts continues. FFO: Ageless Oblivion, Dystrophy, Auroch 3/27/16 (W.)
Graves at Sea – The Curse That Is (Relapse Records) [Sludge/Doom]
Listen
Boy do I love me some nautical themed doom, and if your taste is anywhere near as awesome/nerdy you’ll fancy this as well. After forming nearly fifteen years ago, only releasing splits, an EP and demos, Portland based band Graves at Sea are unleashing their full length debut, The Curse That Is. The first three tracks (streaming on Bandcamp) feature some of the catchier melodic, mid-paced sludge/doom you’ll find this year. When it’s all said and done, this beast of an album totals up to 75 + minutes, so strap on your seat belts for big riffs and fun. 4/1/16 (Jom Pootersan)
Dark Circles/Abstracter – Dark Circles/Abstracter (split- Halo of Flies) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Void” (Dark Circles)
Stream (Abstracter)
Though both the bands on this split are black metal, they’re sonically very different. Dark Circles go fast, hard, and pissed on “Void.” Despite its blazing speed, there’s an underlying sense of disillusionment and weariness to it; it both pumps you up and pulls you down. Abstracter, on the other hand, have a pair of monstrous, cavernous songs not unlike Akhlys or Misþyrming, but substantially heavier. The second song in particular oozes an oppressive air, feeling claustrophobic despite the immense atmosphere it presents. Regardless of which style you lean towards, you should check out both; these two disparate sounds work surprisingly well together. 4/1/16 (Spear)
