This Toilet Tuesday (4/17/18)
It is once again Toilet Tuesday, and we are once again flooding your ears with the newest the metal world has to offer. It’s a particularly meaty week, too; there’s a ton of new stuff, and a fair chunk of it is pretty good. Hans, Bert, and I have picked out a couple that might have flown under the radar otherwise, but be sure to check out the full list for a lot more.
Ails – The Unraveling (The Flenser) [Black Metal]
Listen to “The Echoes Waned”, “Bitter Past”
A black metal album for the summer, maybe? The first track sees the singer alternating between tasteful cleans and a despairing shriek, with instrumentation and songwriting that seems to take subtle cues from prog rock. Fans of Enslaved, Oranssi Pazuzu and other bands that have looked in that direction should have fun with this. The other track is more straightforward, akin to something like Yellow Eyes or Vuyvr, but no less entertaining. I’m curious to see which side the tracks in between fall on. 4/20/18 (Hans)

OH BOY! THE TIME HAS COME! NEW MBR! It might be a little shocking to some, but I am a connoisseur of synthwave and synthwave products. So, let me tell you, boooooy (or girl)! This has been highly anticipated. I have waited until this VERY moment to listen to anything that has been released from album. Let me tell you, it’s fucking legit. I find it’s very rare to come across a chiptune record that doesn’t get boring after a couple of spins, but this is Master Fucking Boot Fucking Record, so it’s going to be anything but tedious and boring. The inclusion of Öxxö Xööx just brings it to the next fucking level. Like I already knew that this album was going to be a game changer but fuck, those vocals are magnificent. So haunting. So beautiful. I know some of you infidels are going to pop this on and be all like, “I just hear Beeps and boops… I don’t get it. I could just turn on my Atari and get that.” You’re wrong, homie. This shit is drum driven. It’s got some dope riffs, even if it’s synths. There’s more fucking layers on this than an everlasting gobstopper. I can see a fan of Ihsahn getting into this. It’s got that black metal atmosphere at times. It’s rife with progginess. Just done with chiptune. I imagine this is where someone is going to ask, “But how does it compare to the likes of Perturbator and GosT?” Well…that’s a good question. I think this is right up the middle of both New Model and Possessor, but I think this is executed better than Possessor. It’s definitely easier to get into than Possessor (I’M STILL IFFY, OK!). You’re going to get vibes of Waveshaper too (he released a new album btw yesterday, buy it). 4/20/18 (Bert Banana)
Dagger Lust – Siege Bondage Adverse to the Godhead (Vrasubatlat) [Power Electronics/Death Metal]

So, this is an interesting release. Dagger Lust brings together the unholy combination of death metal and power electronics. This won’t be easiest record to get into. Upon the initial listen, I could help but wonder if I had a Youtube video going on in the background. Alas, I didn’t. Both “Corroded Vein” and “Black Blood in Mockery” have a very disjointed sound to it, specifically because the production has it sounding like there are 2 tracks layers upon each other. It’s rather uncomfortable to listen to, to be quite frank but it’s also rather intriguing. While there are some blistering parts, (especially on “Black Blood in Mockery”) this is going to be a slow burner. The vocal delivery is full of that wonderful sickness that would fit into a zombie film. There’s some wonderful cymbal work here and some nice bass riffs. Don’t go looking for guitars because that’s replaced with the power electronics. If you’re looking for something that’s rather unique (I don’t know anything off hand to compare) and unsettling, then I think you will find this interesting to listen to. 4/20/18 (Bert Banana)
Nocturnal Feelings – Baarkant (Hidden Marly Productions) [Black Metal]

If you’re pissed off with the shit storm surrounding some of your favourite black metal artists, I have good news for you. This is Nocturnal Feelings. Baarknat is their fifth studio album. They deliver all the intensity of Destroyer 666 and Marduk. They aren’t boring like Watain. They are from Colombia like Inquisition. Now, you can listen to something that’s on par with those four bands without the embarrassment of supporting Nazis/pedos/both. While, admittedly, this isn’t my thing in terms of black metal, but I definitely see the merit in listening to this album if you’re a fan of those bands. The blasts are blasting. The riffs are riffing. The vocals are vocaling. The production is pretty much standard 2nd wave BM. 4/20/18 (Bert Banana)
Labyrinthus Noctis – Opting for the Quasi-Steady State Cosmology (Independent) [Gothic/Prog Metal]

I’m always wary coming across self-described Gothic metal bands due to the proliferation of faux-industrial symphonic metal calling itself “Gothic” in the past few years, so it’s always pleasing to come across a band that isn’t… well, that. Labyrinthus Noctis is not my typical jam, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t drawn in by their gloomy melodies and vocals. The progressive/jazz bits sprinkled throughout make it much more enthralling as well. I can definitely see myself returning to this when I’m in the mood for something a little more on the chill side of things. 4/16/18 (Spear)
