This Toilet Tuesday (6/14/22)
Somehow we have let another Toilet Tuesday happen on our watch, and I’m beginning to suspect that it can’t be stopped. People just keep putting out music in spite of my insistence that I need time to catch up on all the other stuff I haven’t listened to yet, but my cries have fallen on deaf ears yet again. Let us come together and collectively mourn our backlogs this week as the ever-expanding glut of good music swells to even greater turgidity.

I damn near missed out on this one, having heard only a brief snippet of it (per TTT list-building listening habits) and initially dismissing it as more OSDM I’ve heard a million different versions of. This would have been a grave error, but fortunately, some random neuron fired and recalled that Lacertilian was way into their 2018 record, so I went back and gave it a shot. “Decline” is an all-encompassing death metal tune, and a damn fine one, opening on a thrashy melodic riff that builds up through harmonies and layered chords into a crushing doom section haunted by spooky clean guitar interjections. It masterfully pivots through multiple ideas without that feeling of unstable “riff salad” stuff that a lot of bands in this sphere fall prey to. It might sound like any other death-doom band at first blush, but the moment you give it a closer listen, you can hear a lot of nuance below the surface.
